Had an absolute ball today. Took myself and 3 kids + 1 friend to 1UP and played for almost 3 hours Would have stayed longer, but had kids sports to get to. So glad the games could be preserved. Great list of games and it's aircon and jam packed with machines. My favourites were SF2, MK 2 &3, NBA Jam, Sega Rally, Twin Cobra, so much fun. Because it was free play, I was able to finally play time crisis 2 to the end, I just kept playing until we finished the game. That was awesome, in the old days as a kid I couldn't do that, $2 a game and I couldn't afford as a young un. We will be back. Was great to see the arcade was busy, Dads and Mums showing their kids how real games were played! Also played a game of laser force and kids loved it - I stayed in the arcade . :)
Superb. 1UP is the largest free play (meaning you pay a flat rate, rather than paying for each credit) in Australia. It has an excellent range of retro arcade games from the 1970s-1990s. The business has moved to the ground floor of the Laser Force building in the Gabba from their previous location over in Morningside. The new location is smaller and as a result some games are gone. However, the new location is easier to get to, has better aircon, and has food/drinks on-site (served by Laser Force upstairs). Who is this place for? Well everyone. It is great for families, but also great for adults looking to experience the golden era arcade gaming.
Pros: Plenty of games for all to enjoy with a good variety. Majority games working well and sounds not to loud (sensory friendly for noise) Cons: No pinball, Aircon was horrid/not working (people leaving dripping in sweat and VERY CRAMPED! Not as spacious as was advertised. For sure a decent Winter activity, avoid in summer
NBA Jam, Street Fighter 2, Time Crisis 2, Golden Axe and many more old school arcade machines. Hands down the best arcade machine collection in Australia.
1UP Arcade's new location is fantastic! Well thought out layout, great lighting, aircon and tons of genuine Japanese candy cabs running the best fighting games ever made to name a few: SF3S, MvC2, T5DR ect. all candy cabs have Sanwa Levers & Buttons that had no issues and CRT's look amazing well done to the amazing staff and owner! As someone who's been playing fighting games competitively since 2018 and also dabble in various other arcade games this place definitely gets my approval also I dropped in with 6 friends which are also strong players from the Brisbane FGC and 1 is from the Melbourne FGC who is currently here on holiday, they all hadn't been to the new location yet either and happy to say they all approved👍 another bonus is there is plenty of great restaurants nearby so you don't have to go far to get a great feed and return to the arcade for some more games! Sadly I had a negative experience upon arriving as I headed upstairs to the laser force reception which is where you pay for the arcade pass before heading back downstairs and playing, asked the old lady who was a laser force staff member for 1 arcade pass to which she replied "is it 1 or 3?" I gave a confused look to which she followed up with "I saw 3 people come from the car park" while giving me a judgemental bitter look and insinuating I was doing something dodgy, I then responded "I didn't come from the car park I came by bus" to which her mood changed, I paid and she gave me 1 pass. This is completely unacceptable she needs to learn some manners & customer service skills especially considering she is dealing with the paying customers from another business. I was disgusted that she was so quick to insinuate that I was being dishonest and judge me, this type of revolting behaviour will drive away and alienate new and old customers for 1UP Arcade and it ACTUALLY already has! as you can see from the review posted prior to mine by Jake 3 weeks ago who also seemed to have had the displeasure of meeting this old woman who also treated them very poorly over a simple misunderstanding which left the customer feeling unwelcome. Honestly who acts like this towards anyone they do not know? And I say again towards customers from another business? This needs to be addressed before she does any more damage to 1UP Arcade's reputation and public image it's the last thing they need upon re-opening, I want this place to thrive and this is detrimental to the community they're building. Im not going to let this affect the 5 star rating I'm giving as it's not 1UP Arcade's dedicated staff that are at fault it's on the laser force staff member who I hope can do a bit of self reflection upon reading or hearing this
