We’ve been at Berryessa Music School for a year now, and I have to give a huge shout-out to Mrs. Yaoyao! My 6-year-old, started off just wanting to "play" and definitely wasn’t a fan of the word "practice." But Mrs. Yaoyao has this magic touch—she’s shown him that a little hard work actually makes playing more fun. He’s become so much more patient, and he’s already rocked two recitals with the other kids! 🎹✨ What’s really cool is how she runs the group classes. She keeps them super engaging and fun for the kids, but they’re actually learning the "real" stuff too, like solid technique and music theory, which I also refreshed my music knowledge every time. The school is also a total lifesaver for busy schedules. They have tons of afternoon and weekend slots, and if we ever can’t make it, Mrs. Yaoyao is awesome enough to send over a recording so he doesn't miss a beat. They also have everything there—1-on-1 piano, drums, violin, you name it. If you're looking for a spot where your kid will actually want to learn in the North San Jose area, this is it!
My daughter has been taking group piano lessons at Berryessa Music School for about 2 years now & we LOVE IT! Here music ability has grown so much in the last two years & we owe it all to Mrs YaoYao, her piano teacher. My daughter is immensely smart & talented (parent brag), but not always the easiest child to teach. She can get frustrated, impatient, & upset easily. I was a music teacher for many years & I couldn't quite reach my daughter when I tried so we decided to try Berryessa. Music School. Mrs YaoYao is fun but firm & keeps us on track. The kids learn to read music, piano, & singing lessons all in the same class. My daughter has made new friends from her piano class as well. I'm so pleased with how my daughter has been progressing, & now she loves to play the piano & she loves to sing! We owe it all to Mrs. YaoYao & Berryessa Music School
Our 4-year-old daughter has been attending the singing group class at this music school, and she absolutely loves it! The teacher - Ms Yaoyao is patient, engaging, and very professional in guiding young children to develop both musical interest and solid foundational skills. We’re so happy to see her growing confidence and joy in music. In the next session, she’ll be joining the piano group class, and we’re really looking forward to it! The school’s music education system is well-designed — it keeps children’s enthusiasm alive while also focusing on professional knowledge development. They also organize stage performances for kids, which is a fantastic way for them to gain experience, broaden their horizons, and build confidence. Highly recommended!
Update from June 2025: My six-year-old daughter had a fantastic week at Berryessa Music School's summer camp. It was a wonderful experience that completely immersed her in music in a fun and nurturing environment. When I picked up my daughter in the afternoon, she was always excited to tell me about learning to play songs on the piano or trying the violin for the first time. The camp provided an amazing introduction to a wide variety of instruments—including the flute, drums, and xylophone—all in a fun, low-pressure setting. The fun extended beyond just the instruments. The kids enjoyed creative, music-themed crafts, like making guitars from tissue boxes, and played active games like "grizzly bear." The week ended with a delightful mini-concert where the children proudly performed what they had learned. The teachers are what truly make this camp special. Ms. Yaoyao is a fantastic instrument instructor, and Mr. Stanley made the games a huge hit with his fun personality. We were also so appreciative of Ms. Rose, who was incredibly caring and even gave my daughter French braids—such a sweet, personal touch. We highly recommend this camp! ========================================= Yaoyao at Berryessa Music School is amazing! My daughter started with group singing and then got interested in the recorder after seeing other kids perform. Yaoyao is so patient and makes learning fun with games and activities. My daughter even played in the school concert a few weeks ago! She's grown to love music and loves showing off what she's learned. They have lots of instruments to choose from - highly recommend!
My 2 sons have taken lessons with Ms. YaoYao since March 2024. My older son started in piano at age 5, and my younger son started in her music playgroup at age 3. They've both had great experiences in class and have learned so much! Firstly, my kids do not find classes boring or stiff. They love Ms. YaoYao and have repeatedly said they like her a lot because she is so funny and silly. She definitely is very engaging and interactive with the children and is able to hold their attention. She gives out stickers every class, which they look forward to earning. Parents are allowed to sit in classes every week, and I'm learning a lot about music, too. What I find unique about her teaching style is that she teaches the children Solfège, to learn songs singing in "do, re, mi, fa" etc... instead of just memorizing notes. Though it was difficult at first to keep up, I found that my older son can now listen to music by ear and play back music just by listening! He now knows more than a dozen chords and has fun trying to make up his own songs. He also is really great at sight reading, and can apply the notes as it moves up and down the octaves. We have been really happy with his progress! In music play group, my younger son learns the basics of keeping time with the music. He learns about quarter, half notes, etc, rests, and he learns to dance and sing in time with the music. They even play with tambourines, xylophones and drum sets. She offers so many time frames and days when you can take lessons. She is also super flexible and allows us to make up classes on other days. My kids performed at the annual music recital, and it was held in a beautiful auditorium. I felt like my children were true performers, and I got to see how years of dedication with the older children would look like... there are 8 to 10 year olds playing major pieces of music solo, and my husband and I were very impressed! It gave us a glimpse of what my sons will be able to do in the future . We look forward to continuing lessons with Ms. YaoYao and her music school. She offers other instruments in addition to piano, like violin, cello, recorder, and music singing lessons. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a music school for their children!
