For the most part the experience I have now had twice with my dog has been great - techs and vets answer questions, give options and treat my dog very well. Seems they always discuss $$ after every sentence, which I understand as not everyone has the ability to pay and need to be upfront about it. $9k to have my dog stay overnight last year (would pay whatever) but very excessive. Today, i pay over $800 for blood work and some meds - as im leaving the front desk receptionist says "oh they forgot to charge you for basic exam, that will be another $200" - I dont recall the exam, but bloodwork and meds unless the brief consultation is $200 - felt like a money grab at that point
Brought our 5 yo dog in a couple days after Christmas for emergent abdominal surgery for a small bowel obstruction at the recommendation of our vet who had called prior to our arrival. When we got there we were told to scan something & fill out our info & we did. For the next 1.5+ hrs no one said a word to us. Dog wasn’t triaged. We had no idea of the process or the wait time & we knew this was life threatening. Eventually we asked for some type of estimated timeline & were met with attitude & annoyance & never received an answer. It wasn’t even the wait that was bothersome. It was the lack of info given to us & the attitude upon asking a simple question when we shouldn’t have had to. No one had checked in w/us even once. So at that point we left & went to another emergency vet known for being ridiculously expensive, & it was, however our dog received wonderful care & the staff was kind & kept us informed. Please don’t leave me a condescending response about perception. This is what happened. Yes, it could’ve been worse. But it could’ve been a whole lot better.
My sweet baby Nala (golden retriever) just turned 13 on Sunday. By Tuesday she fell very ill. She was not eating, drinking and vomited multiple times. As I was getting the car ready to bring her in, she collapsed. I raced to get her help after being turned away by two other places. I called Blue Pearl, they told me to bring her right over. I let them know that she was in rough shape and that she could not walk. Two vet techs met me with a gurney out front. They immediately began assessing her and getting her fluids. Shortly after, Dr. Muckenhirn let me know that she had done an ultrasound and found a huge mass on Nala’s spleen. Shortly after, the bloodwork revealed that Nala was in really bad shape, multiple organs involved. The Dr. never took surgery off the table but made it clear that if we go that route and see that the mass has spread to other organs, we may have to just not wake her from surgery… She gave me options. She was very sweet and compassionate but also straight forward. I chose to euthanize, as at this point I realized that my girl was struggling and she was not going to come back from this. They gave me as much time as I needed to say my goodbyes. They made me feel confident that I could trust them with Nala’s care, during her last few hours and after life. The hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life. I was only able to do this due to the care and empathy I felt from Dr. Muckenhirn and her staff that night. Tonight I went back to pick up my baby’s ashes and they did a wonderful job with her remains. I received a clay paw print, an engraved box and fur clippings along side a hand written card. The care and compassion from the front staff, to the vet techs and especially the doctor. To anyone who assisted with Nala’s care, I cannot thank you enough!!
My first, and sadly only, experience here was incredibly compassionate and welcoming. The staff was gentle, understanding, and handled everything with such care. I drove an hour to see them after every vet in my area turned me away, and I’m so grateful I did. They had a room prepared for us when we arrived, and they gave my companion the dignity and peace he deserved in his final moments. I couldn’t have asked for a kinder experience during such a difficult time. Thank you for everything—you will never be forgotten.
Our 2 year old dog became very ill and we initially had her seen at EVS vet urgent care. That vet started a workup and gave my husband his differentials, but suggested it could be Addison disease in crisis and he did not have the ability to run a cortisol level or treat that in the urgent care. We brought her to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital and by that time she was not even able to stand. (She had walked to the car and dramatically deteriorated during the car ride there.) When staff saw us carrying her in, they took her back as a code red immediately and worked for hours to stabilize her. She had critically high potassium requiring calcium gluconate, low blood sugars requiring dextrose boluses, low blood pressure requiring aggressive IV hydration, and her temperature was low requiring rewarming. Blue Pearl staff provided all care options and financial information in a compassionate manner. Drs Nikirk and Capobianco were so kind as they asked about our goals of care (and while I was very emotional as we still weren’t sure at that time if Muffin would survive despite best efforts.) The vets kept us updated on Muffin’s clinical status, her results, and their differential diagnoses. We elected to do anything we could to save our sweet dog. Their workup showed a low cortisol level and they diagnosed her with Addisonian crisis (which was treatable!). Unfortunately, they did not have a vet on staff for day shift so they let us know early in the evening that she would need to be transferred to another pet hospital in the morning. They worked diligently throughout the night so by morning she was walking, wagging her tail, and urinating. The vet called me early in the morning to let me know how she was doing. Since she still would not eat by mouth, they sent her records on to Green Acres to continue IV meds and fluid support. (That was much more expensive despite her condition stabilizing before transfer and an overall worse experience.) These vets and techs made such a difference in my family’s life. We lost another dog less than a year ago and seeing Muffin in this state was very scary and traumatic. Our family is grateful to the staff who worked tirelessly to save her life. She is now very happy (loves her steroids) and back to being our kids’ best friend.
