We had to make a reservationalmost two weeks in advance, but absolutely worth it. The food was beyond delicious. We got the spicy carrots, the beets, the veggie tamales, and the sword fish. Each dish was epic! Oh and we finished with the chocolate dessert. Highly recommended, one of the best culinary experiences I've had in the Bay ❤️
Came for dinner on a Friday night and sat at the bar Service was very good and the food was outstanding We had the carrots and pozole for starters.. both had exceptional flavor The balance of flavor the sauce, beans and carrots was a little off.. could have used a bit more carrots and crunch (texture). I had the butternut squash mole which was very good and my partner had the tamales which he loved. Nice atmosphere but can get a bit tight with space. Overall one of my favorite dining experiences in Oakland
If you’re here for the first time, I would recommend: - Smoked Trout tostadas: great appetizer! Beautifully balanced. - Spicy Carrots Misantla: this is a vegan dish but it’s so flavorful and memorable. I want them to release a cookbook so I can recreate it. - Smoked Duck Confit: rich and delicious. I would skip the potato flautas (unremarkable). The pollo rostizado is a generous serving; it can easily serve 4 people. But the taste of the marinade is just average, and the salsa verde is dialed down for the Piedmont and Allendale gringos. It’s a cute place for date night. The first time I came here, the music was way too loud. They turned it down the last time. Service during my last visit could be improved. They’re VERY pushy on the chips and salsa; we were asked 5 times if we wanted them( which are not complimentary! And with added 10.75% tax and 18% tip, will add another $11+ to your bill. Dining in Oakland is ridiculous!). Something as simple as that should be complimentary honestly, like Korean banchan. We also were asked for refills on our cocktails and desserts multiple times by multiple staff. It felt like they were trying to add more items to our bill, despite us having 2 cocktails and 4 dishes already. FYI, they don’t do any complimentary bday treats or wishes. I listed my reservation as a bday dinner on Resy and it didn’t seem to make a difference. A greeting would have at least been nice! On the upside, we were seated all the way in the back near the bathroom, and Chef Dominica constantly checked in on us during our meal. She even waved when we left! That was nice of her.
First let me preface that this restaurant is located just a few blocks from the house I grew up in. So I was surprised when I planned to have dinner in this area. I was thrilled to find this restaurant not just surviving, but absolutely thriving. Despite the pouring rain, finding parking was easy, and the sight of the packed house—a true testament to its success—instantly built excitement. The great vibe was palpable, though I should note right away that the music was quite loud inside, making conversation a bit of a challenge. You may want to ask for a table outside. The menu immediately grabbed my attention with the promise of Duck Carnitas, but I ultimately settled on the Pork Carnitas and the Roasted Chicken Mojo De Ajo. We ordered a classic House Margarita and a Paloma for drinks. While both drinks were enjoyable, the serving size felt a little small considering the price point. The food, however, quickly won us over. The Pork Carnitas were absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor, and surprisingly generous in portion size—a welcome sight. My one small wish was for more of the side pickled, spicy carrots and jalapeños. The Roasted Chicken Mojo De Ajo was equally impressive, served as a beautifully flavored half chicken on the bone. What truly stole the show and is, without question, a must-have dish was the Spicy Carrots Toasted Almond Misantla. This side was amazing, delicious, and an absolute standout. The spice was about a 3 or 4 but it did not linger. Just order it. Overall, despite the slightly high cost and the volume of the music inside, the quality and flavor of the food made for a truly memorable dinner. If you find yourself in the Diamond District and are looking for a fantastic meal, stop here. I'll bring others here to experience the food and vibe.
⭐️ Excellent Food, but Service Felt Like Self-Service ⭐️ The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. However, the service felt more like self-service. I had to ask for the drink menu, to-go boxes, and even the check. We were never offered a dessert menu, even though it was my mother’s birthday. Our entrées also came out immediately after the appetizer, making the meal feel rushed. The food was fantastic, but I hope next time the service matches the quality of the kitchen.
