I had a great experience here! My friend and I just happens to be driving by and noticed tents setup so we decided to stop. We went in the bookstore and they had everything from some of the best books for all ages to homemade jewelry and soap! This is a must have in the community, please go support!

While waiting for our Uber, my husband and I, on a whim, ducked into Community Book Center not realizing it was closed. Mama Jan, who later introduced herself as one of the owners, was sitting casually at the front of the store. She welcomed us in with that unmistakable New Orleans drawl, as if the shop were preparing to open instead of close. “Where y’all from?” she asked. “Indianapolis,” we chimed in unison. “When you leaving?” “Tomorrow,” I said. “Well, go on and look around, baby.” So we did. We darted through the store, oohing and aahing over the African garb, T-shirts, and books, all the while watching the time because our Uber was on the way. We ended our brief shopping spree with a promise to return the next day since our flight was late and we kept that promise. When we came back, Mama Jan was behind the counter, ringing up a line of customers and weaving African folktales as naturally as breathing. I listened intently as I browsed aisle after aisle, mesmerized by her storytelling. When it was my turn at the register, she was in the middle of telling a story her grandson loved The Lazy Lion. Her voice painted such vivid imagery that I felt like I was part of the tale. When she finished, I said, “I want to buy that one.” She smiled and pointed me toward the shelf, but after searching high and low, I realized it was sold out. “Well,” she said with a wink, “I know it’s in somebody’s Black bookstore but if all else fails, Amazon might have it.” She rang up my husband’s and son’s items next, and as we left the store, it felt less like saying goodbye to a shopkeeper and more like parting ways with an auntie who’d just wrapped us in love and story.

The selection is curated to perfection. A range of local authors, young adult books, politics, current events, poetry, religion. Voices of black authors celebrating black culture in a welcoming space for all people to enjoy. I was greeted warmly and engaged in a wonderful conversation about books and life. I left with two excellent books and a new appreciation for how this business still puts in detailed and great care into their work. I recommend this place to everyone, and I will return soon.

An Amazing Experience: What an extraordinary bookstore and community center! Nice variety of all the essential books in a culturally relevant space. The staff was extremely welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable. Lots of nice merch and gift items too! In a great location on Bayou Rd. I walked a few steps and paid a visit to neighboring Black owned restaurants and other Black owned establishments after my bookstore visit. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit to visit this bookstore! Much success to the Community Book Center in New Orleans. This bookstore is a definite must-visit for everyone!

Excellent local bookstore and community center. I've been a few times in the past and purchased several books. It's new books only so things can get out of hand quickly. I haven't seen one of their speakers/authors yet, but their is usually a discussion happening in the store at all times. Books tend to be curated for the African American experience, but you'll find things on all subjects here. I somehow managed to avoid spending money last trip even though I saw 3 books already on my list, next time.
