We love to support this local independent bookstore. They have a good kids area in the basement. We've taken our kids (8&10) to two author talks and our kids loved them! Employees are always very knowledgeable and can guess the book when you have forgotten the title and can't find it. They also do various events that support the local schools throughout the year!! Bonus-- East City books is directly across from the best independent game board game store in DC (Labyrinth)-i typically visit them both!
I recently visited East City Bookshop while searching for a particular book, but unfortunately, they didn’t have it in stock. That said, I was still impressed by the overall vibe of the place. Even though I didn’t find what I came for, there’s a lot to love about this independent bookstore. The shop has a warm, inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for people who enjoy wandering and discovering new books. It’s well-lit, with books neatly organized and easy to browse, which is a plus if you’re someone who prefers a more structured shopping experience. The shelves are stocked with a great variety of books, from bestsellers to niche titles, so even though I didn’t find my specific pick, I could tell there’s a lot to explore. What stood out most to me was the staff’s friendly and knowledgeable attitude. Even though I didn’t interact much with them directly, it’s clear they’re passionate about books and eager to help out if you need a recommendation or have questions. They also seemed to really care about creating a space where readers can take their time and enjoy the experience. While I didn’t have much luck finding my book, East City Bookshop strikes me as a great spot for casual browsing or picking up a new title on a whim. There’s a really welcoming community vibe, and I can imagine this being a place locals visit regularly. Plus, they often have author events and book clubs, so it’s definitely more than just a place to buy books. In the end, while this wasn’t the right bookstore for my specific need, it’s still a solid choice for anyone who likes supporting local businesses or enjoys exploring a bookstore that’s got heart and character.
Personally, I did not have a great experience at first, but later it was resolved when their GM called me * see update at bottom * I had a lot of issues with my package showing up, and I had to pay for shipping, even though my package took much longer to get here than it should have. I called the bookstore concerned the book was lost in the mail since I live somewhere rural, yet they didn’t seem concerned in the least since they were already paid. They told me to call back in two days. When I did, they just told me to call back in another two days, with no progress. Overall, despite me telling the bookstore my concerns they still made me feel like the issues were dismissed. I had to call multiple times and I really hate having to bother people, but I felt like they treated me like i was being ridiculous even though the book. it felt as if they thought I was trying to get a book for free. When really I just wanted the copy I paid for. They weren’t kind and while their shop is cute, from what my cousin in DC says, if you are dealing with an online order, while I understand that they have a lot to process, they can be quite curt and dismissive. I would not suggest for online orders. * update * I wound up spoken with the stores general manager, who was very kind and they took me seriously they had been out of town, but genuinely seemed to care about my issue. They asked for my feedback and what they could do differently, in hopes to improve my experience and experience for others like me. They asked for suggestions on how to improve. I’m very pleased with my product and I’m even happier that they took the time to call me. My original review hadn’t even been posted long enough for them to have noticed, they just saw that I had had a negative experience and had wished to speak to the store manager who took me seriously and thoughtfully listened to complaints about shipping. I am very pleased to say that they made what had been an unpleasant experience a positive one.
Nice bookstore! Loved the wall of dog photos and organization of the store. Lots of fun gift items too! Hoping they’ll carry my forthcoming book someday (2026 🎉) because it appeared they put on events with authors and such!
Visited this bookstore for the first time last week for a book signing. This bookstore was spacious, bright, and super friendly employees. There are several chairs throughout the space so you can sit and enjoy reading. The kids area is adorable and very entertaining for young kids. I love all the hand-written recommendation notes. They really pull your attention to a new book that you may not have noticed. There are several great restaurants nearby as well.
