The food is really good, and the price is pretty reasonable for the AYCE sushi. Last time I went it was around $28 for dinner ($18.99 for lunch)I think. However, the price seems to have gone up recently - I think it was $26 or so before. The service can be pretty spotty, too. I'm not sure if they have enough help, so staff is sometimes strung thin, leading to noticably long wait times for service.
Let me start by saying this: if sushi had a Hall of Fame, Hokkaido would be wearing a gold jacket and giving an emotional speech right now. I walked into Hokkaido downtown expecting a normal sushi experience. You know – decent rolls, questionable life choices, and the internal debate of “Do I really need five rolls?” What I did NOT expect was to meet Becky. Yes, that Becky. Becky “with the good hair.” A sushi guardian angel disguised as a waitress who suggested the "all-you-can eat". From the moment I sat down, Becky took control of my culinary destiny. She made me a promise: “You want me to pick your rolls. Trust me.” And like a brave soul jumping out of an airplane with no parachute, I said, “Alright Becky… take the wheel.” She did not just take the wheel. She parallel parked it perfectly. First up was the New York Roll. Clean, classic, and confident. Like the sushi equivalent of a well-tailored suit. Fresh flavors, perfectly balanced, and a great way to start the meal. Then came the Godzilla Roll, which absolutely lived up to its name. Big. Bold. Dramatic. Probably capable of destroying Tokyo if left unsupervised. Every bite felt like an action movie scene – crunch, flavor explosion, and a little bit of chaos in the best way possible. Next was the Earthquake Roll, and honestly, I felt some seismic activity in my soul. The textures were on point, the flavors were layered, and I’m pretty sure I blacked out for a second from pure happiness. If tectonic plates tasted good, this is what they would taste like. And finally, the Jalapeño Roll. A spicy little diva. The kind of roll that looks innocent but then whispers, “I hope you’re emotionally prepared for this.” Fresh, zesty, just the right amount of heat. I wanted to stand up and slow clap. Throughout this entire sushi marathon, Becky checked in like a proud coach watching her athlete win gold. Plates arrived fast, beautifully presented, and clearly chosen by someone who understood my palate better than I understand myself. The atmosphere? Top notch. Clean, lively, modern – the kind of place where you feel classy even though you’re about to eat your body weight in raw fish. Everything came out looking like edible artwork. By the end of the meal I was full, happy, and questioning whether I should propose to the entire restaurant. Final verdict: Amazing food. Great vibes. Elite-level service. And a waitress who deserves her own Netflix special. If you go to Hokkaido, do yourself a favor: ask for Becky, surrender your menu, and let destiny (and soy sauce) do the rest. 10/10 – would absolutely let Becky choose my life decisions again.
I got a reservation on a Saturday for my friend’s birthday party at 6pm and we didn’t leave until 8:45pm. We go here every year for my friend’s birthday party and the service has gotten slower every year. We could tell that the restaurant was short staffed and that the other customers were growing frustrated by the long wait time. My friend noticed that his sushi was warm due to it sitting out for so long. The food was fine but the wait time left us with a sour taste in our mouth. Unfortunately we will be ending our tradition of celebrating our friend’s birthday at Hokkaido and will be going to a different restaurant next year.
This is the best Japanese restaurant in Norfolk. The menu offers such a variety there is something to please everyone. The food was fast and delicious. The prices are competitive and the service was outstanding. I highly recommend Hokkaido and I will definitely be back.
I’ve DoorDashed food from here a few times because the food is that good that I order. Last night we experienced the dine in and it was nice. Loved the atmosphere and the decorated Japanese style inside. The ladies were nice. The only thing was I noticed is that our hostess checked on a table that came 10 minutes after us more than our table. Other than that, I really liked the food. I would definitely come back to try the sushi. Finding parking took 10 minutes since it’s downtown Norfolk. So be prepared to drive a bit to find one. This place is a gem!
