So I’ve seen 4 different stylists here trying to find the right fit for me and my hair. For context I have curly hair 3a. And I haven’t found someone who can properly cut my hair. The first hair stylist was Sydney and I really liked her but my appointment took a long time I left with long layers which was fine because she was fixing the mess of a previous stylist not from this salon. But when I got home to rebook her for later she took off curly hair comfortable from her profile. Which is fine it’s preference and I could tell it stresses her out. I then looked through all the stylists again and chose hunter. They ended up cutting my hair with awful harsh lines with a razor and I had to cut my long hair that I waited 10 months to grow out to my shoulders. And tiny front bangs I did not want. My hair was right above my butt when I got this cut. I let them go back in and fix it but I had to cut it all off to fix it because of the harsh lines and layers due to the razor (This one was specifically traumatizing) I then went to the only black girl they had hoping and praying she would be able to cut my hair. Maua styles. She cut my hair and I was left with shelfy layers that stood out like a sore thumb. At this point I let it grow out for another 8-10 months and I tried again. This time I tried to see Coyana. When I got home from the first hair cut I was disappointed with the long layers and the layers where different lengths leading to my hair to look a little lopsided and when I pulled my hair back in the shower a good section was quite a bit longer then the rest of my hair. I went into get it fixed and I ended up with the shelf look again. Instead of dimension I got like two layers of hair and a harsh line of where my layers are supposed to be. A lot of people love this salon like my sister but they have straight hair. If you have curly hair that lands in the middle I would not come here. So much time and money and uncomfortable conversations just to not be understood. I really wanted to like this place. They are nice but don’t know what they are doing with curly hair unless you want the standard cut with long layers.
This was my first time trying out a local salon and it shattered my expectations. The vibes are on point! As soon as I walked in the sense of community from the people there and the environment immediately made me feel welcome. Meg was my stylist and they were beyond sweet, an absolute pleasure to work with, and I just can not get over the result!!! Can't wait to be back :))
I have nothing but AMAZING things to say about this beautiful shop! I have had 4 different services done there (wax, hair, nails, AND tattoo). Each and every time it’s a positive experience and artists who LISTEN to what you want. My special shout out is to my nail tech, Katy! 1 year ago I started to treat myself to some nails and then decided to make it a thing! I get hard gel done by Katy (she also does builder!), and her artwork is always INCREDIBLE. She will take an idea and always hit it out of the park every single time. It’s also my monthly therapy session 😂 The shop is ALL INCLUSIVE, LGBTQ+ forward, and friendly as hell! THIS IS THE SPOT FOR ALL YOUR SELF LOVE NEEDS!
Lilith’s Lair is the most iconic LGBTQ+ friendly hair salon in Grand Rapids. They are not only amazingly accepting, but also incredibly talented stylists. I cannot tell you the amount of hair stylists who have attempted to do vivids on my hair, but fail miserably. Lore was able to pull it off to perfection. They are upfront and honest about their abilities, what they are and are not comfortable doing, and it’s greatly appreciated. After figuring out my identity, and going through the “big chop” with all of my hair, Lore was not only extremely accepting of me and my gender identity, but also gave me the haircut I had been dreaming about, with beautiful vivids. I also have scalp psoriasis, and Lore works with my scalp to give me a haircut that not only helps my scalp heal through treatment, but never judges me for it or makes me feel bad about it. Cannot recommend this salon enough, especially if you are LGBTQ+. I feel at home here, and I believe you will too.
Hunter (@harlequin_hunter) totally brought my dream haircut to life! They were so easy to talk to and they explained every step along the way (educated me on my hair and proper products too!) I’ll definitely be returning in the future. Highly recommend booking with them! 🐾
