Went on a Saturday at 4pm with my partner - this was an especially fancy treat for us and it was wonderful. The food was fantastic - starters were incredibly flavourful and compact, and mains were generous and delicious. Service throughout was perfect, equal parts casual and professional, with some lovely surprises brought to us across the meal. House wine was great, desserts were just as good. We’ve not tried a huge amount of somewhat expensive restaurants before, but would recommend this place to anybody.
I celebrated my 60th birthday with close family and friends at Locanda De Gusti, in Dalry Road, Edinburgh, on 29 December and had an exceptionally good experience. The early stages of preparation were dealt with by email and the communication was very good. Owner and chef Rosario was very understanding about the fact that two of my guests might not make it due to old age and illness and said we could just let him know earlier the same day. We also had a meeting over coffee to discuss the menu. I made an addition to my red meat selection on the day itself, and there was no fuss or difficulty. The restaurant itself is very atmospheric and busy. The staff were lovely, warm, welcoming and attentive. The food was exceptional. We had a tasting menu that saw us share a selection of hot and cold starters, meat, fish and vegetarian, then a slection of pasta dishes to share from three platters, all were superb, then sharing platters of sea bass, lean lamb chops from racks of lamb and slices of rib eye, cooked to perfection, with a selection of vegetables as well. I didn't want the fuss of a birthday cake so we had a small selection of desserts, but the staff put a candle in and sang 'happy birthday' anyway. We were welcomed with a very nice prosecco, and we moved on to Aglianico and Greco di Tufo, both from Campania, where Rosario and my own family hail from. It was a fantastic experience. At the end, the leftovers, including most of a bottle of Greco, were packaged up and brought to the table for us. I didn't realise until we were on our way home that they had also included a full bottle of Greco, my favourite wine from Campania, as a gift. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. The price was extremely reasonable for the quality of the food and wine we had, as well as the service, so it's not just a restaurant for special occasions, though it fits that mould very easily. Comfortably the best Italian restaurant I have experienced in Edinburgh.
Not only the best food Ive had on my 5 week trip to the UK from Sydney .. but some of the best food Ive ever eaten. You could taste the love and care that went into each dish.. with every sauce slapping you in the face with flavour! The meatballs I had for my starter were honestly to die for! I had to order them again to take back to my hotel room (see last photo 🤣) The waitress who we found out was the chefs daughter was incredibly nice, and made us feel so welcome! If I lived in Edinburgh, this would be my go to for an incredible feed! BRAVO!
We had absolutely one of the best meals ever here. The seafood was fresh and delicious, the pasta was amazing and the desserts were the cherry on top of a great meal.
A few weeks before our trip to Scotland, I started researching the best seafood spots in Edinburgh, and Locanda Di Gusti kept popping up as a top recommendation. I’m so glad I followed the reviews and made a reservation—it was hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. Located about a mile and a half from our hotel on the Royal Mile, the walk itself was charming, offering peaceful views of the less touristy side of Edinburgh and even the backside of the castle. But let’s talk about the real star: the food. We arrived hungry and started with a pasta dish to share, followed by the seafood bowl for two. This platter was a dream—octopus, clams, prawns, langoustines, calamari, and mussels—each bite incredibly fresh, perfectly cooked, and bursting with flavor. Truly the finest seafood we’ve ever tasted, and not even a hint of that overly “fishy” taste you sometimes get elsewhere. We finished with a couple of desserts and two lattes, which capped the meal beautifully. While the bill was on the higher side, every penny felt well spent for the quality, flavor, and experience we received. No regrets whatsoever—Locanda Di Gusti is a gem and absolutely worth the visit. Don’t miss it!
