I’ll go low and come high. The A is for Atmosphere — and that’s where Mastro’s truly shines. The ambiance is elegant, upscale, and absolutely delivers on the fine-dining experience. The space feels luxurious, visually appealing, and the service aligns well with that expectation. From a vibe standpoint alone, this is easily a 5-star setting. Unfortunately, the food itself was quite underwhelming given the hype and price point. Here’s what I ordered: • Calamari • Spicy Mambo Salad • Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye • Wagyu Tallow French Fries • Lobster Mashed Potatoes • Garlic Truffle Cauliflower The calamari was disappointing — honestly, I’ve had better at Carrabba’s. The Spicy Mambo Salad was fine, but be prepared: it has a strong horseradish-style kick that really hits your nose. The Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye was simply okay. The kitchen nailed the medium-rare temperature, but flavor-wise it felt flat. It seems like you need to add one of the topping enhancements for it to really shine, which shouldn’t be necessary at this level. The lobster mashed potatoes were fairly generous with the lobster, but overall bland. The garlic truffle cauliflower felt overcooked and could really benefit from some sort of sauce to elevate it. And lastly, F is for Fries — extremely overpriced. Yes, you get a bucket of them, but I honestly would’ve rather had Chick-fil-A fries. Overall, while the atmosphere and service are strong, the food didn’t justify the cost for me. I likely wouldn’t rush back anytime soon. And as of now, this place has nothing on Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf. If you can land a reservation at Bavette’s and compare the two, you’ll wholeheartedly understand what I mean.
The restaurant is exquisite, service impeccable and the food outstanding, with some exceptions. We loved the Sea bass and the Salmon dishes that had generous size fish and the chef provided peppercorn sauce and garlic lemon sauce for the two respective dishes upon request that elevated the dishes even further. Thank you chef! However the Wagu sushi was beyond disappointing. Would rank it as the worst sushi ever. Rice with asparagus were the only ingredients aside from the hot pepper having no trace of wagu or any scent of meat/ steak - avoid and you will thank me Unfortunately we finished with a 5 layer chocolate cake that comes in a tower shape meant for 4-6 people, perhaps, yet with no dessert refinement. Would definitely try something else In summary, we would come back again for the Sea Bass and maybe Steak
This is a very special place. My wife and I love to do different food experiences for our anniversary rather than get gifts for each other. This spot did not disappoint! We started out with the bone marrow appetizer and oysters Rockefeller. What an amazing way to start. The bone marrow was melt in your mouth and so full of beef flavor! On the crostini, it was a perfect bite. The oysters Rockefeller were also delicious. The oyster to filling ratio was spot on and cooked perfectly. Before entrees, we split a bowl of the lobster bisque and oh man was it so good. It was creamy, blasting the tastebuds with flavor and most importantly; FULL of lobster meat. For dinner we splurged! I got an Australian waygu ribeye while my wife got a waygu filet. Best steak I’ve ever eaten. There were both so tender, seasoned perfectly so that it highlighted the beef, and cooked to perfect medium rare. The only way to eat steaks of that caliber. For sides we got sauted Brussel sprouts, truffle gnocchi Mac and cheese, and my personal favorite; the king crab fried rice. All three was absolutely delicious and could EASILY feed up to 6 people. Needless to say we overindulged. Overall, Mastros delivered on a dinner that will probably only be had once maybe twice in our lives. It was phenomenal and if you’re looking for an extra special place to have a high end dinner, this is the place.
We stopped by Mastro’s with a few friends to enjoy some coffee, tea, and desserts, and it turned out to be a lovely experience. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, with live music by a talented pianist and singer named Jessica, who truly elevated the evening with her performance. Their butter cake was really tasty and great (fatty lol 😂), and we couldn’t finish it. The service was excellent—Kim, one of the managers, was exceptionally respectful and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. Overall, it’s a great spot to unwind with friends, enjoy some delicious desserts, and take in beautiful live music. Highly recommend!
I'm a big Mastro's fan generally, and I love this specific Mastro's location so much! I have been to this location a few times now since moving to Chicago earlier this year, and all of my experiences so far have been wonderful. My photos and the review are specifically from my 30th birthday, which was particularly amazing. Kim and the team made a point to make every moment of the evening delightful, from a personalized menu to a happy birthday message on the dessert! And the food and vibes, of course, were amazing as always. Thank you Mastro's Chicago! I'm already excited to come back!
