The National Galleries Scotland: Portrait is a premier art museum in Edinburgh dedicated to showcasing portraits that capture Scotland's rich history and culture. Housed in a breathtaking building that blends historic and modern elements, it features permanent and temporary exhibitions with diverse artistic styles. Visitors enjoy free admission, a relaxing layout with ample seating, informative displays, a library, café, and gift shop. Ideal for art lovers, tourists, and anyone seeking inspiration, it offers a welcoming space for reflection and discovery.
This is one of my favourite places to visit when I come to Edinburgh. It's particularly delightful in the run up to Christmas when the beautiful main lobby is filled with a huge tree and decorations. It feels a welcoming space with lots of opportunities for quiet and reflection (do check out the library and have a seat for a moment). In the permanent exhibition, the 2 large scale paintings of medics (and the unknown man) have made me weep each time I've seen them. The changing exhibitions are always worthwhile too. It's free to get in if you can't afford a donation. It has a great little gift shop and a cafe selling decent lunches, hot drinks, and cakes. Do check it out.
So this is probably my favourite gallery. The building itself is a work of art. A subtle mixture of old and new. The grand hall is amazing. There are pictures of various types and styles - something for everyone... and to discuss at length. The layout is relaxing, every thing is accessible and there a plenty of chairs to take a rest. There are large text descriptions. The library is a nice place to relax, even among the death masks. My favourite is Voltaire, such a cheery chap! Cafe serves nice food/cafe and the shop has decent relevant stuff. There is both a permanent and temporary displays. I can easily spend a day there... and it's all for free.
(12/21/25) sadly only got to skim through the rooms in the last 15 mins before it closed but i'm definitely coming back the next time i'm in edinburgh. gorgeous paintings and rooms. really friendly staff too, shoutout to argus who not only indulged my slightly unusual request to write in my book (after telling me i had 5 mins left there :ppp) but i also had a nice chat with x
Absolutely lovely museum. Firstly, the building itself - both inside and outside - is stunning. The busts of prominent Scottish figures are amazing, and the information boards are excellent if you enjoy actually reading history. I spent around four hours here and could easily have stayed longer. The portraits are beautifully displayed, well lit, and thoughtfully organized, with high-quality, informative descriptions. Personal preference only: I’m not a fan of modern art, and I think those works belong in the Modern gallery. Other than that, I loved this place.
The National Gallery of Scotland, located just north of Princes Street, houses a vast collection of portraits, as its name suggests. The museum boasts a diverse range of artists, both renowned and local. With multiple floors, I recommend starting from the top and descending. Each floor offers a wealth of historical insights into the portraits displayed. You’re likely to spend a considerable amount of time here, fully immersed in the museum’s offerings. Notably, the museum is free to enter, but donations are greatly appreciated. Overall, the National Gallery of Scotland is a spectacular museum with an impressive collection. The main hall is particularly beautiful and worth spending a significant amount of time exploring.
