On my way to the studio, I received a message from the vet that my dog’s labs had come back with concerns. I didn’t want to be charged the late cancellation fee so I decided to still attend class but kept my phone silenced and on me just in case. During class, the vet responded with recommendations and I was trying to figure out the severity of the situation. Marla, the instructor, came over and told me that phones were not allowed. I explained the situation quietly and told her that if it wasn’t an extenuating circumstance I’ve never brought my phone into the studio and that it was silenced and didn’t seem to be bothering anyone. She didn’t care and told me that I should leave, kicking me out of the class. My partner and I both left, which arguably is a bigger disturbance than if I had stayed. I can’t believe how unkind and unsympathetic Marla was. I first started going to Modo in NYC over 10 years ago and chose this studio when I moved to the area because I had such a great experience in NYC but I’ve decided to cancel my membership and go elsewhere. For a studio that preaches compassion, Marla seems to be the complete opposite.
BEWARE arriving 2 minutes AHEAD of class will NOT guarantee entry. It was my first time here and I was set to get to the studio 10 minutes early to class. Traffic pushed back my arrival to 6:25 pm. I couldn’t find street parking because it was gridlock hours so I had to circle the block which added 3 minutes to my arrival. When I got there at 6:28, the receptionist did not give any sense of urgency and was trying to make small talk and then she got distracted when another client walked in. By the time she checked in with the instructor it was 6:32 and I had missed the class by two minutes. I was extremely frustrated by the complete lack of flexibility. I want to emphasize I was NOT late. The receptionist could have ushered me to the class quickly but she didn’t. There was no clarification on where to park and very easy to miss the fact that they do not allow late arrivals when you’re just scanning the abbreviated class description on Class Pass. It took half an hour to get to the studio and I was frustrated to be turned away at the door. No where else have I experienced this kind of utter lack of accommodation in LA. I can’t imagine the accessibility issues for someone less able bodied. Don’t know if I will come back.
Modod Yoga is both a sanctuary and a place of great power...and havign taken to day with Emily Morwen I will express she is not only one of my favorite teachers at Modo, she is one of the greatest I've experienced anywhere. Her pacing and sequencing are superb and she empowers her students equal to every challenge she offers them. She is delightful, intelligent and masterful in her delivery and I am extremely grateful to be able to practice with her...
Wonderful studio. My first choice - Echo Park is awesome too. I have been coming here since I moved to LA and it's more of a home than any home I've had and lost in the city. Sadly, I had to give up my be awesome membership when another apartment became unaffordable and I needed to leave LA. But one day, I hope I'll be rich enough to do more than buy an occasional class pack. *See below for hilarious but sweet response from the studio about energy exchange... since I'm living in a different city most of the time.*
I had a mixed experience at this yoga studio. The receptionist was very rude and unwelcoming, which almost made me walk out. However, the yoga teacher Thalia was absolutely amazing, knowledgeable, kind, and truly inspiring. Their classes are the only reason I decided to sign up for a membership. I hope the studio works on improving front desk customer service, because the teachers definitely deserve better support.
