Staff was very knowledgeable. I brought my instrument in for repair and it was done within the quoted time. The price, however, was almost double the initial estimate ($30-40 went to $80). My instrument also returned with new scratches which I'm not impressed by. Edit: Adding more clarification given the owner's response. Regarding estimated price, right, I assumed that the quoted price was for both repairs since I believe I asked about pricing after going over everything. Regarding the scratches, some damage was pre-existing, but I found more scratches afterwards, though I do not have photo proof.
Was in the market for a new brass instrument for my high school-aged son. Having looked around the online shops (Sweet and Revb), I got a reasonable idea of how much an intermediate to professional, Large Bore Tenor Trombone with an F-attachment costs. I also like to shop locally. I found a large selection. Keep in mind I mentioned "intermediate to professional," not beginner in my price range... up to $3500, with financing ability. Good prices, good quality. Easy loan/financing paperwork.
This store is not open on Saturday and Sunday and this is the time when people who work for a living go shopping with their money. I tried one Saturday to purchase something and they were closed. I had to come back the following week when they were open. One day they closed earlier than their store hours and no one seems to answer the phone after 3pm, I have tried on numerous days to get anyone at the store to pick up the phone past 3pm, no dice, more than 5 call attempts. I have seen stores closed on a Sunday before but never on a Saturday. Coming into the store it is dark and there is typically no one at the counter and you have to wait for someone to show up. The doors are now cardboarded up so you cannot tell if the shop is open from the outside. I am a lifetime woodwind owner of all woodwinds (just not double reed), a music educator, and I bought my original flute and piccolo from Mr. Mel Bay himself at his physical brick and mortar shop. I have been through a lot of repair shop situations with all of my woodwinds and stringed instruments in my lifetime, including repairs for my students with other shops in Los Angeles, San Jose and St. Louis. I brought in a horn that I had tested prior to dropping it with them, to get it into playable condition knowing that only one key was sticking. I asked for an estimate, to get it into playable condition. I didn't receive an estimate on the time in the timeframe they told me I would get it, it came several days later as a voicemail. When I got the estimate via a voicemail, it was $300-700 +an additional $1500 (for repad) with zero information on what they would actually do to the horn. When I called back and talked with them and inquired as to what they would be doing to fix it and said this to them, they got a bit short with me on the phone and said, "well ma'am this isn't like a car repair shop where you would get line item estimates for what we are going to do from a dealer". Then they said they would charge $1500 on top of that for a pad replacement. I said yes, that is what an estimate is... You tell me what you have assessed that you need to do to justify the price you want to charge me. You would describe and tell me what items you think need to be fixed and why the great variance in range is from $300-$1500 to make me understand why you gave the low and high figures. Bottom line on any estimate, anywhere... If you are going to work on my car or my horn you better be able to articulate to the customer what it is that you are going to do, or I don't trust you to work on it. That tells me a lot of you cannot articulate one single thing on the horn that needs to be fixed. This was my experience, the people answering the calls and giving me the estimate info could not tell me one thing they would be fixing on the horn. Please fix the assessment and estimation procedures in your shop to give the customer information about an actual estimate, also fix customer service, and hours of operation on the weekend at this store. Please answer the phone when your hours say you are open. Reading your shop reviews this is not the first time that you have received this feedback. If you change these things, it will definitely help your business be successful. If you don't listen to your customers, then you end up not having any. Have a good day.
Had a great experience trying out some alto saxophones at the store today! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and even lended me a mouthpiece to use since I didn't have one. Would highly recommend!
Park Avenue sells defected/used items as 'new'. Do not buy an item from here and expect to return it if you find a problem with it. They tried to charge me over $500 in a 'restocking fee' for an item that they shipped. Claimed they had photos of it undamaged but they never provided them. Had to file a credit card fraud report against them to recover the funds they decided to keep.
