I had a great one on one session with Tara recently, which she generously offered after I missed the Advanced Fundamentals class I had signed up for. Unsurprisingly she knows her stuff, from camera features to composition and exposure and broader artistic philosophies, but more importantly she has the ability to meet students where they are, orienting the course around their interests, questions and challenges. I recommend sending a link to your online portfolio if you have one. In my case, before our session, Tara looked through the ~60 or so photos I had put up on my website. The conversation we had about my photos was maybe the most valuable part of our session. Tara offered very encouraging and thoughtful feedback - it was really cool when she liked one of my photos that I think most people would swipe left on. She took the time to explain what details of my photos she liked, which was interesting and helpful as she frequently picked up on things I hadn't even noticed, and also what didn't work, or could be improved on. This portfolio "review" contained some great practical advice that I think will permanently shape my photographic process from composition and exposure to editing. Finally, Tara sent a detailed email the day after our session, outlining the specifics of everything we'd talked about and providing more pointers on areas for me to pay attention to and develop going forward. This was super helpful as the notes I took were more sparse and incomplete. She even encouraged me to send more photos for her to comment on along with other questions about gear or technical issues. I definitely plan on working with Tara again in the future!
From camper: Very fun experience! Was worried at first because my group had a lot of younger kids in it but Tara really made sure everyone learned something. She was super helpful with any questions I had and took us to a lot of cool places I had never been before. 100% would recommend for beginners who are just learning photography or intermediates who want more experience and professional feedback.
My 15-year-old loved this his experience with Perspectives Photo camp! Tara was a fantastic instructor—encouraging and informative, but also gave him the space to explore his own style. He learned a lot, went on great field trips, and came home more confident and inspired. As parents, we loved the end-of-week photo show. Far exceed our expectations.
Wonderful experience! My 12-year old learned so much photo technique and benefited from Tara’s daily feedback on how to build on her strengths. Campers also enjoyed traversing the Bay Area by BART, bus, and hikes in their quest for interesting photo sites throughout the week. By the end of the week, they pulled together an impressive studio gallery with carefully curated, nicely edited prints set to music. Tara is creative as a photographer, skilled as an instructor, gentle with kids, and forges a warm community vibe. Highly recommend this camp and will be looking forward to future offerings!
My daughter attended this week long camp this summer and absolutely loved it. She learned a ton and felt like she grew in many ways during the experience. I also LOVE the fact that they go to beautiful areas all over the bay and walk a ton. Tara is so dedicated and creates a very warm, welcoming and community based vibe for the students. This was especially important for my daughter since she was a bit younger than most of the students and was nervous about being a complete beginner. After seeing the impressive photo slide show presentation at the end of camp, my son said, ‘Mom, I seriously can’t wait to go to this camp.’ We will be back!
