Philadelphia has a side that can only be seen from the water, and we want to show it to you. First Light is a 32-foot sailboat, the only sailboat charter based in Philadelphia, and she sails on the Delaware River. A typical sail runs north past the Cherry Street and Race Street piers, under the Ben Franklin Bridge, on toward Graffiti Pier and the art along the bank, then south past Petty Island in the middle of the river. Container ships move through the shipping channel, tugs work the river, and the skyline shifts behind you as we sail. We motor out and get settled before the sails go up, and most people are surprised by how quiet it gets once the engine is off and the sails are filled. The only sounds are the water, the wind, and whatever conversation happens naturally. Some evenings are golden and still. Some have a sky worth watching roll in.
