My wife who is celiac and I dropped in for breakfast and were charmed. It’s a relatively small, funky place on the main street of Ottawa’s Byward Market. We found it online when we were returning on a Sunday morning from the Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield Quebec where we had rocked out the previous evening to the local Bushpilots band. We were seated immediately at a seat by the large window that can be rolled up in Ottawa’s warmer months. The late morning crowd was buzzing – a mixture of couples, foursomes and one large family gathering of 10-12 people with children and grandparents included. Our waiter appeared soon after and knowledgably responded to my wife’s questions about what was safe for her on the menu. From the various options she chose a wild mushroom omelette with goat cheese which came with salad, fruit, and gluten-free bread ($22). Unfortunately the crispy smashed baby potatoes are not available gluten-free. Despite this, she enjoyed enormously the eggs , bread, and very tasty fresh salad. For my part, there were so many interesting concoctions on the menu I was temporarily frozen, but finally decided to indulge my appetite and chose the Hungerman Breakfast ($26). It was a full plate with three fresh easy-over farm eggs, apple wood double smoked bacon, pork sausage, a piece of crab cake, chipotle crema, crispy smashed baby potatoes, mixed greens, fresh fruit, and toast. All of it was a standout. Both the bacon and sausage were delicious, the potatoes were a unique rendering that were crisp on the outside with a melt-in-your-mouth softness inside, while the crab cake was the tender surprise winner with the crema a welcome bonus flavour. This was a hearty meal that was enjoyed slowly with each different mouthful fully appreciated and rounded off with the delicious blend of fruits and vegetables. We’re looking forward to coming back to sample the dinner menu!
Visited this place for brunch with a friend about a month ago and I had to leave a review! We got a reservation so we were able to be seated with minimal wait. I ordered the Shakshuka with lamb meatballs while my friend ordered the Eggs benedict with the patates gratin. I’ve never had shakshuka before but I thought it would be a great opportunity to try it for the first time, and I’m happy that I did! My meal was absolutely delicious! Everything was cooked and seasoned amazingly and was tasty to pair with the sourdough. The slices that they gave weren’t enough for me and I just had to order more. The service was great and the atmosphere was nice. The interior is beautifully decorated and aesthetically appealing. Had a great time overall and would definitely consider coming back!
We had the Ratatouille Wellington as a shared appetizer, the clam pasta and beef bourguignon. Although everything was tasty, I found a bit on the heavy side of herbs for two of the 3 dishes. Service was very good and the place was cozy
I was really looking forward to trying brunch here, and it took a few tries to finally secure a Saturday reservation. The space is quite small and tightly packed, though the menu had a wide variety of options. We ordered three different dishes (Wild mushroon skillet, Shakshuka, and Lamb meatballs and eggs), but when they arrived, the portions were noticeably smaller than expected. The flavors were okay, but I was hoping for something more memorable or unique, which never came through. Considering the portion sizes, the final bill felt expensive. Overall, I don’t think the experience is worth the effort of making a reservation.
I have been there a total of probably 4 times in the last 5 months. Every time any of my family members visit Ottawa this is a perfect breakfast spot. Our servers have been really kind and considerate to my dad (who cannot eat salt) and even when I went with my 1 year and 6 month old niece. There is a wide selection on the menu that can be tailored to fit more specific preferences. Another good thing is the really generous portions, the food is really filling and definitely worth the price.
