I've been practicing with the Seattle Buddhist Center for several years. I've tried other places for meditation and/or study - but this is the place for me. It's a friendly, intelligent community with a perfect mixture of meditation, study, and spiritual community. Whether you're just curious about meditation or Buddhism, or if you want to deepen your practice and discuss the teachings of the Buddha -- this is the place. We also have annual retreats with the groups from Vancouver, Tacoma, and Missoula. Also a great Center in San Francisco -- there's a worldwide Triratna community if you want to tap into it -- or just settle in here with the Seattle Center. All I know is that I am so grateful that this Center is here.
Everyone is super friendly, and they make you feel welcome immediately. They'll help you find a comfortable seat for meditating: one that works for you rather than prescribing a one-size-fits-all setup. This could be cross-legged on a whole pile of cushions, kneeling with a bench, sitting on a chair, or even laying down or standing up. They're very accepting of whatever works for you. Instead of giving a sermon, someone will lead a discussion. Everyone sits with their chairs in a circle, drinking tea & eating cookies, fully engaged in a conversation about the Dharma. Every person's experience & perspective is valued, so it feels really supportive. The community of people dedicated to supporting each other on their path is what brings me back week after week.
Best place for Sangha building. Enjoy a community of supportive people ready to help you walk the path.
I'm Buddha! (You, too, can be happy Buddha, but that's a choice YOU must make every cherished moment of your life from this moment forward). @artpotheosis (Chance Rodeo Battlehawk on Facebook)
My favorite thing about the SBC is how warm and generous the community is. I've been to a number of their Centers throughout the US, and they all have this same feel. To me, that says a lot about their values and practice! The Center has a lot going on -- from friend night on Sundays to Meditation drop-in classes, formal Intro to Meditation and Buddhism classes, advanced dharma study, and retreats. It's easy to find a level of engagement that suits individual pace and interest. If you're looking for opportunities to connect with others, learn and practice the Dharma, I highly recommend it!
