Wonderful sailing school. We brought our teen down to sail with south coast and had an absolutely amazing time. Captain Bob Buddingh was our instructor and I can’t say enough great things about him and this school. Very patient and informative we will absolutely be back to sail with them again.
When you want to learn how to sail with finesse and not just brute force sailing this is the place for you. Captain Lucy and her team of professionals will ensure you learn what you came for vs a fast-food style in-and-out certificate.
My observation and experience with South Coast Sailing Adventures concluded that they are some of the most knowledgeable and committed in the business. I've taken the ASA 101, and 103 courses, got involved in the Wednesday Night Races, and they got me hooked. I plan on continuing with the courses and get involved as much as I can. The staff, skippers, captains, and mentors are both personable, professional, and they invest in you as much as you invest in yourself. Each skipper and captain not only possess a wealth of knowledge but are generous to share it. Whether you just want to just have fun one day on a sailboat, or go through the learning process, they provide an amazing experience you won't forget. It might appear like all fun at times, but I assure you, they are committed to safety and mentoring. I've made some friends along the way, connections if I choose, and they've provided the door of opportunities for anyone who wants to walk through. Ask about their "little vacation trips". Captain Lucy will hate that I called them that, but she's the best! A big thank you to Captain Lucy, Captain Bob, Captain Olen, Richard, Heidi, and staff.
Captain Lucy and her team at South Coast Sailing Adventures are fantastic. I’ve taken several ASA courses with them and have always felt supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow. They’ve been very willing and accommodating with scheduling, which has made it easy to keep progressing. The focus on skill-building is excellent, and they offer plenty of opportunities—both social and course-based—to stay sharp and keep learning. Great atmosphere, great instruction. I’m really looking forward to continuing my sailing journey with SCSA!
Took the ASA103/104 with instructor Gary Hodges last weekend on his snazzy Beneteau 43, with an in-mast furling main sail, furling jib, and even bow thrusters. It was a fantastic experience!! The winds were a steady 18-22knots with 36 knots gusts most of the sailing days. He gave us an intro to coastal navigation and had us go over the charter checklist as if we were chartering the boat. Then we set off. We sailed to landmarks and a compass course, undocked and docked the boat, did MOB under motor and sail, mooring and anchoring procedure and the rest of the textbook curriculum. I highly recommend reading the textbooks ahead of class and bringing your list of questions and skills to practice. As with any class, you will get out only as much as you put in. Also, for those reviewers who say instructors were not too engaging or thorough in teaching all material, I reply that sailing is often physically, mentally intense and the instructor will not force you to practice things if they can see you are tired, stressed as that can easily lead to accidents. It takes time under sail to gain these skills. They want you to enjoy while learning and keep sailing rather than cram the curriculum. Since I came from New York and needed this cert to charter in a flotilla in Greece next month, I immensely appreciate SCSA not canceling the class on account of the weather. Besides the expense of returning for the class, I would've missed learning how to deal with such weather under sail, motor and docking. This is a great school with a ton of expertise and they provide access to well-maintained, fully outfitted large sailboats for students to learn on. Too bad they are so far from me as I would gladly return for future classes, regattas. They are also very hospitable— I arrived 8hrs early on Thursday and they had plenty of porches, snacks, and coffee for me to enjoy while I waited. Another important factor in your choice of sailing schools may be that Tookie’s Seafood is across the street and there’s a waffle place around the corner.
