A look at the past that almost didn't happen. If Leland Stanford's wife hadn't left the house to the Catholic Church and nuns hadn't put most of the furnishings in the attic and photos weren't stored at Stanford University and so on.... We wouldn't have this magnificent relic of California's past. We'll worth a visit.
The Stanford Mansion was really cool and way more interesting than I expected. The building is beautiful, the history is explained really well, and the staff is super knowledgeable. It’s calm, informative, and a nice break from the busy parts of downtown. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in Sacramento Did I mention it was free!!
There are tours every hour on the hours, so depending when you arrive you may have to wait. However, there is information to read in the visitor center prior to the tour, so you wont be bored.
We stopped here while on vacation. This was one of my favorite stops while in California. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. The mansion is quite impressive. It is in very good condition. As someone who has remodeled old houses, I can really appreciate all the work that has gone into the house. It was hard to believe that the tour was free. I highly recommend.
Take a trip to the past where you can learn about Jane & Leland. The furniture is beautiful and from the era where the mansion had all its glory. Intercoms located throughout the mansion for the ease of the head mistress. Don't think about taking a photo as they're highly prohibited these are from the welcome entrance and are the only ones allowed. I will tour again!
