Located in the Perth Cultural Centre, it features rotating exhibitions, interactive spaces like Gallery 09 for families, a rooftop sculpture area with city views, and amenities including a gift shop and café. With a focus on community engagement and artistic innovation, AGWA provides an inspiring, accessible experience for tourists, art enthusiasts, and families alike.
The AGWA offers a world-class cultural experience without the price tag, as general admission is completely free. It’s a space that truly feels like it belongs to Perth, placing a massive focus on local WA talent and First Nations artists, which gives the collection an authentic, homegrown soul you won't find anywhere else. For families, it's a brilliant day out, the Gallery 09 "Re-PLAY" space is a hands-on, interactive heaven for kids that encourages them to actually touch and create art rather than just look at it. Because they rotate through a massive collection of art and bring in fresh exhibitions, it genuinely feels like a different gallery every time you walk through the doors. I highly recommend a visit 👌
Cool contemporary focused gallery. A rich selection of work though not very large. Friendly and informative staff. Some excellent installations and wonderful works by indigenous artists. Worth checking out if you’re in the city- within walking distance from James st strip.
The Art Gallery of Western Australia is a fantastic place to spend a few hours in the heart of Perth. The building itself is impressive, with a modern, open design and a calm, welcoming atmosphere. The collection offers a great mix of contemporary, Indigenous, local WA and classic works, and there always seems to be something new or thought-provoking on display. One of the highlights is the rooftop sculpture area, featuring well-known artists and offering excellent views across the city definitely don't miss it. The gallery is also very accessible, with plenty of seating, helpful staff, and good facilities, making it easy to enjoy at your own pace. The gift shop and café are a nice bonus, and the free entry makes it even more appealing. While the gallery isn't huge and some exhibition spaces may occasionally be closed during changeovers, the quality of the exhibitions and the care taken in curation more than make up for it. Overall, AGWA is a well run, inspiring cultural space and a must visit for both locals and visitors, especially when new exhibitions are on.
I had an incredible experience at this exhibition—truly beautiful and absolutely worth visiting. I managed to see four exhibitions within the same space, and as an architect, I greatly appreciate the layout: it has hidden corners and subtle areas that aren’t immediately noticeable, making the experience more intimate and surprising. It took me a little while to figure out the floor plan, which added to the intrigue. Personally, I went to see Borders, Borders, which was intense and really moved me; out of the five exhibitions I visited, it was the one that affected me the most. The venue also has air conditioning, clean restrooms, and all the amenities needed to enjoy the visit comfortably. I’m sharing a few photos of everything as well.
Plenty of different varieties of art to see and enjoy! Had enjoyed looking and learning about artists and some amazing sculptures and displays. It was a nice day in the city and their are plenty of places nearby like the museum and library. Enjoyed it very much and will visit everytime their are new artist's on display. Very impressed!
