Randy and his team are amazing!!! - I had a last-minute holiday trip, new in Oakland, and after seeing the reviews and being in contact with Randy, I knew this was the place. The passion Randy and his team has, it is visible from the first time. He took care of my baby Pepe so well. Professional service from the meet and greet to the moment I picked him up, without mentioning the daily updates along with the flexibility the team displayed. Cannot recommend this place more! - Gracias Randy!
Randy is an authentic dog lover. We had no worries knowing our pup was in The Pack's care while away. They are well organized, loving to all the animals and understanding of each of their needs. They are one impressive team! 100% recommended.
Randy is a stand up guy and you can tell he really cares about dogs and his customers. My husband and I boarded our dog Marcy with him and when we contacted Randy with some issues that came up, he took immediate action to try and come to a resolution and find out what went wrong. Although we didn’t have a great experience at The Pack because of said issue, I felt compelled to leave a good review because of the integrity and accountability that Randy showed, and we know that what happened to us was a one off incident. The way he handled the problem when it came up says a lot about him and the business, and this is the type of person you want caring for your dog. We also appreciated his responsiveness to our many questions before we boarded our dog, and the video/picture updates we received during her stay.
Have boarded my dog multiple times and the name says it all: “The Pack”! My furry friend Sokka has loved staying with Randy and I've enjoyed the peace of mind of leaving him with someone I can trust! The facility is very clean and well kept and every time I show up the drop offs and pick ups are efficient and friendly! Furthermore Randy even offered to drop my pup off for me (I live very close to their location) when my car battery had died while I was out of town! Talk about above and beyond service! Sokka is looking forward to his next stay and I would highly recommend The Pack Fruitvale for anyone who needs to board their dog for a trip!
I want to start by saying that I think The Pack Fruitvale is a great facility, and Randy, the owner, was kind and respectful in all of our interactions. I do believe he genuinely cared for my dog, Ella, during her stay, and that there was no willful neglect or intentional harm. I also appreciated the video updates I received while I was away — it was nice to see how Ella was playing and getting along with the other dogs. That said, based on my overall experience, I won’t be returning. I dropped Ella off for a six-night boarding stay from Wednesday, May 21st to Tuesday, May 27th while I was traveling out of state for a wedding. The meet-and-greet beforehand was smooth, and the drop-off process was easy. Ella seemed comfortable sniffing around the space, and I dropped her off with her food including labeled feeding instructions, her harness, and leash. The concerns started on the morning of my return, Tuesday around 11:30 a.m., when Randy texted to ask if Ella typically licked her back paws. I let him know she does not — she’s never done that before — and he shared that she had licked them raw. When I asked for a photo, he sent one, and I was shocked to see her back paws red, puffy, inflamed, and visibly irritated. When I asked when this behavior began, he told me he had noticed her licking her paws “a few days ago” but hadn’t said anything because he thought it was normal (maybe a little anxiety which is understandable given that she’s in a new place with new people and animals) until it worsened overnight. This is where I felt communication fell short. I would have appreciated being notified at the first sign of her licking her paws not just when things got significantly worse. Similarly, when I arrived to pick her up that evening, I found out for the first time that Ella had chewed through her harness. I wish I had been informed earlier — especially since I don’t have a car and rely on Uber to get around and let Randy know in advance when I was coming to get her. Randy did apologize for that and kindly offered me a spare lead so I could get her home. After pickup, I immediately booked a vet appointment. At the vet they did a full exam, scraped her paws, and did a few tests. The vet’s diagnosis was contact dermatitis, likely caused by exposure to a chemical or irritant on the ground at the facility. The vet ruled out mites, mange, and bacterial infection. The visit cost $236, not including the $20 cone I had to purchase, the $30 for the medicated shampoo and spray, or the $29 harness I now have to replace. These expenses nearly matched the $360 I paid to board her, and that’s not even including any follow-up vet visits that may be needed. To Randy’s credit, he expressed genuine concern about what happened, said he was trying to determine the cause, and offered to help with vet expenses and to replace the harness. He also mentioned that the chemicals used to clean are stored away from the dogs, which I have no reason to doubt. Still, this has never happened before — Ella is fully vaccinated and has no history of paw issues — and I received her back in a condition I did not drop her off in. This was my first time boarding Ella in a facility (she has been boarded in other people’s homes in the past), and while I appreciate many aspects of the experience especially the kind treatment, video updates, and Randy’s willingness to help, I was left feeling disappointed and anxious by the lack of earlier communication and the unexpected injuries. If you’re considering boarding here, I recommend asking about how health issues or unusual behavior are monitored and when they’ll be communicated. I believe Randy truly cares about the dogs and is working to understand what happened — but for me, this experience was difficult enough that I won’t be returning. The picture of her pooping is just a screenshot of a video I took of her right before dropping her off where you can see what her paws looked like prior to drop off on May 21st.
