As a non student, the facility seems worth it if you’re already here. The procedures developed around customer service are centered toward students as the target demographic. 2 ID check ins per semester, 3 locker unlocks if you forget your combination. Which make sense, for students, however, being treated like a child when you’re an adult by student workers is infuriating. Don’t expect to have anything resolved that falls outside of a student’s routine. The students don’t think critically with a mindset centered around customer service, and default to the “script” they were taught. If you have an issue, request to speak to an adult from the get go; this saves you time and from having to deal with students that still haven’t managed to control their attitudes, or who’s brains have not finished developing if you require them to think critically.
The University of Houston-Campus Recreation & Wellness Center is one of the best recreation centers in Houston. The facility itself is top-notch, with great equipment and a wide range of amenities. It's a fantastic place to work out and stay active. My only real issue is with some of the staff. They are mostly college students who can act like they have a lot more authority than they do. Sometimes they get a bit overzealous with the rules, which can be frustrating. However, the quality of the building and everything else it offers still makes it a great place to go.
I’ve been going to the UH Rec Center for a couple of years now as an alumni member. Overall, it’s a great value if you can get the alumni rate but service is lacking. Here are some pros and cons: Pros: - Great alumni rate if you commit to 1 year - Lots of equipment - Indoor track - Indoor and outdoor pools (but weird hours for the indoor pool) - Huge locker room - Turf and “sled” in the Red Zone Cons: - The staff is by far the area that needs the most improvement. I understand that they are mainly students but it’s VERY apparent that most of them don’t want to be there and don’t take their jobs seriously. Often times, they’re all huddled together somewhere chatting with each other, as opposed to in their designated areas. They sit on the equipment, especially the forearm machine by the squat rack. No one tells patrons that are running the wrong way on the track that they need to change directions. It takes a week or longer for them to replace the batteries on the digital weight scale. Sometimes you can’t find anyone to help you with your locker. If your friends with one of the staff members, you have free reign to do whatever you want. - They allow people to bring cameras and tripods on the gym floor and in the Red Zone. - You have to pay for towel service. - They haven’t updated or fixed the rowers in probably 30 years. - When school is in session, the gym is packed most hours of the day. Hard to find equipment, especially since some students are on their phones for 5-10 minutes between sets. - The guest passes are a joke. Members can bring up to 3 guests but they need to pay $15 each. This is the same rate that all non-members must pay if they want to use the gym so I don’t understand the point of having guest passes. - Would love to see a larger turf area and an actual Centr or Rogue sled, especially since sports like Hyrox are getting really popular. Something is better than nothing but the sled they have is pretty useless. Nice facility but this will be my last year as a member for the reasons I stated. I’d rather pay more and get better service, better amenities, no tripods/cameras, and the ability to bring in free guests.
The staff is rude and entitled because they don’t want the wellness center to have more customers so they don’t have to work more. Employees are mainly student workers, and they don’t seem like to be professional and responsible for the center. Frankly, very sad that they don’t care for the business of the school’s wellness center. An AI customer service assistant is much better than them. It is such a waste of money to hire someone who doesn’t have work ethic.
This facility is amazing. Fabulous pool, indoor track, climbing wall , courts, workout equipment.
