A few months ago I was hunting around for new place to train. After boxing my whole life and calling fighting quits, I’ve always stuck to primarily CrossFit training, but as many people know the love for fighting/ training never leaves you. I’ve dabbled around at a few gyms in the past for some trials and drop in sessions but have never reallly felt comfortable! That was until I found Wilkes. I grew up in a family run boxing club, and that’s same kind of feeling you get training and Wilkes, a tight community filled with kind and TALENTED people. Personally at this time I have no desire to compete again, and there is never a question of that at the gym, The staff just want you to come in, learn and enjoy your session. I also work shift work, and having the ability to train at random times throughout the day and not just at night is a huge bonus. If you’re a complete beginner, transitioning from other fight sports like me, or just looking to get fit, Wilkes is the place to go! No egos just great people.
At first glance, martial arts may seem primarily focused on self-defense. While that's certainly an important aspect, the true essence of martial arts extends far beyond that. It's about instilling self-discipline, fostering a strong work ethic, cultivating patience, building both physical and mental strength, and teaching responsibility toward family, society, and country, as well as good manners. After attending a birthday party today at the school and interacting with the young instructors, it became evident that this martial arts school deeply embraces and teaches these values. This stands as a testament to the school and, more often than not, reflects the leadership of the head instructor
I have been training BJJ at Wilkes for the past 5 years consistently, top quality coaches and a family friendly environment. As a female in a male dominated sport, i felt apprehensive at first, however i found everyone at this gym very welcoming and eager to share their knowledge with me, it has helped shaped me into the person i am today, I have always felt respected and a valued member of the wilkes family.
