Our family was in San Jose for Christmas and spent an afternoon there. Had a great tour guide (Jay) and really enjoyed the experience! The place opened to the public in 1923, and just thinking about the hundreds of thousands of people who have experienced it over the last century is pretty cool. We really enjoyed the bonus 'history' room you can walk through off the gift shop (no charge) and read about how it was purchased from Sarah Winston's estate and how it has survived (and thrived) to today. The gardens (free bonus) and grounds are interesting too as is the large gift shop. Prices in the shop are on the high side, but we bought a few memorabilia anyway. Worth a couple hours of your time!
Great historical place. Guided tour isn't cheap but popular for tourists. There were lots of Christmas vendors in the courtyard when we went. Spooky vibe, I'm sure Halloween is even better. Tours do sell out so pick a time and buy your tickets in advance to avoid potentially waiting a while. There's lots to see and do while you wait though so it's not too bad. I shopped in the gift shop.
Soooo much fun! A wacky and wonderful adventure ans you explore the eccentricities of an infamous widow. Jay, our tour guide was awesome. Some new sections of the building were open since I last went many years ago. I highly recommend this little know gem off the typical San Francisco tourist path.
The tour was good, informative, and actually took a bit of the “mystery” out of the house in a fun way. The holiday decorations were beautiful, and our guide was fantastic; knowledgeable, passionate, and clearly loved what they do. My only real gripe is that they sell too many tickets per time-slot. The tour felt crowded, and we spent a lot of time waiting for groups to squeeze into rooms. Still, it’s definitely worth a one-time visit. There was also a holiday craft fair on the property, which was a nice touch, but it leaned more toward dark spirits and paranormal themes rather than cheery holiday gifts. Overall, the staff was kind and friendly, and despite the tickets being a bit pricey, I’m glad we went.
Been here several times and place never gets old. Its always worth visiting. Its nice to see the passionate tour guides who give entertaining tour of the history and legends behind Sarah Winchester and her mysterious home. The prices can be pricey. They also allowed pictures and no video taking.
