Sent our kids here, they loved it, especially the archery!
Archery, gun safety, sail boating, swimming. Wonderful staff!
I went here as a child and now send my two kids every summer. My youngest LOVES it. It's a great way for him to spend his summers. In the few times I've had an issue or concern during the past 4 summers that my kids have been going here, the counselors and directors have handled it professionally and expeditiously. We really love this camp. :)
Great little cabins. My favorite part was seeing the stars at night, it's quite surreal how many they are. The cabin I stayed in had one room, one bathroom, kitchen and a futon in the living room. It felt really cozy and had a great cabin vibe.
While I like that my child had the opportunity to do many things that he enjoys, there are serious problems at this camp. Supervision: kids are left unsupervised at times and that has led to issues between kids. I get staff have to put stuff away, but that's when you get your group with another group for a moment and have that staff member watching them. Positive behavior reinforcement. I am very much a realist and view responsibility as something that each individual has for their own behavior, BUT I hold adults to a higher standard than children. Staff should set the example of the behavior they wish to reinforce. If you are going to use positive communication and behavior reinforcement then use it, don't belittle and verbally assault a child and expect a child to roll with it. Safety: The stories parent's hear... A camp counselor shot another counselor with a dull tipped arrow. The counselor who got shot then threw that counselor in water and shot him back... I am all for rough housing and having fun, but I know the YMCA isn't, schools aren't and so the example being set is terrible. If you take all of that away, it's a decent-ish camp, with kids who will bully each other (even though that is also against the rules), but hopefully most kids have fun.
