I almost do not want to write a review because GymKC seems to be the best kept secret in Kansas City; I am afraid if I give it too much praise, it will become more crowded! Ease-of-Membership: The GymKC is a great gym and an even better organization. The sign-up process was painless and, more importantly, the cancelation process is just as painless. This is not a gym that forces you to go to the ends of the Earth and back just to cancel. Facilities & Equipment: I was at the Uptown location, and while they have a few others, I cannot speak to those. That being said, the Uptown location is great. It has a real rustic, jungle gym feel. It's equipment is serious and effective where it counts. I never had to wait for a bench, a squat rack, a pair of dumbbells, a smith machine, or a cable machine the entire time I was there. The GymKC was not my first gym, but it had pretty much all the equipment I needed such that I only had to make minor modifications to my previous gym's workout routine. Now, I was blown away by the variety, however, nothing can be perfect. There is some equipment I think the Uptown location could use more of. First, the Uptown location has no dedicated pull-up bars. If you want to do a pull-up, you'll either have to use the ones that seem like they're 50 ft in the air by the cable machines or use the assisted pull-up machine. For legs, the Uptown location really only has one leg press (it's the best, most difficult leg press I've ever used, but there's still only one). They do have another leg press closer to the desk in the corner of the gym, but it is terrible. It should instead be called an injury press. Its resistance curve is extremely strange and ineffective, you're more likely to injure yourself on this machine than workout your quads. Finally, my last gripe is with the hip adduction/abduction machine (It's a combo). The abduction portion is great, but the adduction portion is way too easy and doesn't feel right. I would recommend to get two separate machines. Crowdedness: This is the best part! I never saw the GymKC very crowded. It never mattered when I went be it the morning, afternoon, or evening, I never found the gym what I would consider crowded. Sure, the gym has "peak" hours, but I would have dropped to my hands and knees and thanked God if I walked into my old gym at it was as "busy" as the "peak" hours at the Uptown location. Truly a hidden *gym* (get it?). If you're staying in Westport, I cannot recommend this location enough, and the staff and manager are very nice and accommodating too.
I was coming to KC from DC for work for 2 weeks and looking for a good gym. I had been calling around, and luckily, Brad was the one who picked up. He took care of me right away no appointment needed. He pro-rated my fees and got me in at a very reasonable price. I absolutely love this gym. It’s a disciplined environment with no music, and everyone trains with a high standard that fits me perfectly. I really hope they open a location in the DC area someday! Thanks again, Brad truly appreciated.
This gym is horrible and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, been telling everyone I know to avoid it. I went here for the last year and wanted to share some of my experiences! I’ll try and keep it short though. The owners do not care about these gyms at all. Stuff is always breaking, machines will be broken for months at a time and half the equipment has duct tape holding it together. I know people that work there and they’ve told me that the owner will literally come in and act like she didn’t know all this stuff was broken when they themselves have reported it to her. Also, when I first joined one thing I really loved was all the plants everywhere, they have since almost all died due to a mealybug infestation (I collect tropical plants and warned them about the problem months ago, they did nothing and let them all die). Oh and they don’t ever play music, it’s always weirdly silent in there. About a month ago I got a skin infection from the grey floor mat at the Uptown location. I know for a fact I got it from there due to what I was wearing/the location it popped up in the next day. When I complained they refused to do anything to help me or improve the facilities by providing yoga mats to stretch on that you are able to wipe down yourself. The owner pretty much just said I could bring my own yoga mat but they wouldn’t be getting any. They do provide them at the other locations though so I feel like this is more just them being cheap and not wanting to buy more (and I found out from a worker there that they are supposed to have the floor mat deep cleaned once a month but they literally couldn’t remember the last time it was done). They had no problems raising the prices 6 months ago but literally nothing has been fixed or improved, only gotten worse. Every complaint I have brought to their attention has been met with being told they’re not going to do anything to fix it and in one instance when a man at the westside location was being extremely disruptive, I was literally told I could just go to a different gym if I didn’t like it. So long story short the owners here obviously don’t care about their gyms or their clients all that much. Don’t waste your money, there’s plenty of other better gyms around here!
I worked out here for a little over a year and this gym is basically perfect if you know what you're getting into. It's a reasonably priced, no frills gym with easy sign up, no contracts, everything you need and nothing you don't. It's 24/7 but even at peak hours you can get a lift in just fine. If you like a proper locker room and sauna and Cafe and stuff then look elsewhere, if you just want a clean, simple, and fairly quiet gym to exercise and get out of there, this is the place. I'm not sure I'd drive across town for it, but I lived close and this place was perfect for me. Two other locations and twice weekly boxing classes included, so you've got options. I'm only canceling because I'm moving out of town, otherwise I could see myself lifting here for years to come.
Basic in the sense that it has exactly what you need to get the job done. And then some. Loaded with equipment and machines, perhaps a bit too many, this location lends itself well to a gym as it is quite LARGE. (Inside a former strip mall lobby and shops) Spread out, it has completely seperate areas, which makes it good for several reasons - like avoiding annoying stack slammers and knucleheads. It is also kept relatively clean for such a large space. Monthly fee good and its open 24 hours which is good for when you want to avoid peak hours.
