I had a disappointing experience at this location today while checking out with my young son. He had picked out two books and was excited to share with the cashier that he had found a Mario book and a Frozen book. His voice was a little elevated because he was excited, but he was not yelling or being disruptive. The cashier responded by telling him to use his “inside voice” and commented that it echoes in the store and that he was loud. I understand that stores can be busy, but the comment felt unnecessary and dismissive, especially toward a child who was simply excited about books. My son is currently in therapy and we are actively working on communication skills, including voice volume when he gets excited. Moments like this can be discouraging for children who are trying their best. It would have meant a lot to see a little more patience and kindness in that interaction. Because of the experience, I chose not to complete the purchase and left the store. I hope staff are reminded that you never know what a child or family may be navigating, and that a little grace can go a long way.
