This high quality European style bakery was right next door to our hotel, so we got breakfast there 3 days in a row. Buttermilk biscuits were great, as was the avocado veggie bagel, fruity bran muffin, yogurt granola parfait, and tea lattes. Tons of interesting canned foods on shelves both local and nice Euro imports, cheeses, and takeaway meals. A few seats family style inside, and more cafe tables outside. Surprised they only have one odd type of egg - not fried, just near-liquid scramble.
If you are a baker, you will find a bakery inside. Shop was full of bread variety. A hot running item in the shop is bread. There were pastries and spreads . I picked up bread, a spread and pastries. If you are in DC this is a shop you must visit.
In all honesty, the chocolate cookies are ok. What makes this reviews five stars is the almond croissant. It was absolutely phenomenal. The croissant was flaky and buttery, and there was a plenty of almond frangipane inside. Also, the Cookie Roberts (shortbread with pecans) is very, very good. A lot of other good-looking baked goods and breads as well. We’ve also enjoyed pies from there before, and they were very good (got blueberry and peach). Great location and friendly service to go with their gourmet market, and you’ve got yourself a neighborhood favorite.
My uncle picked up plain and chocolate croissants for me to try. Place was crowed and outdoor seating is limited. Most disappointed that my croissants were on the burnt side. For a popular bakery I was not happy. From what I can tell seems like a very good quality set of ingredients, but to over bake pastries is just unacceptable. Chocolate chip Cookies were good and chewy. They offer wide variety of baked goods to try.
Don’t order the runny egg unless you know you like a barely cooked scrambled egg that’s pooling in liquid. The English muffin or bagel gets drenched and soggy. And I like my scrambled eggs not fully cooked, but this is another level. We mentioned how both my wife and I couldn’t eat it to two of the staff and they were like “yeah, it’s called a messy egg, duh.” It’s even worse with the cheese - too salty. And the mashed avocado isn’t good either. Nor is the homemade lox. And the Counter Culture coffee isn’t amazing either. I don’t often write reviews like this, it’s just my 5th time giving these sandwiches a chance because I love this neighborhood gem and hold out hope I might like their breakfast as a treat once in a while. I love the retail options (though expensive) and the baked goods are great, which is why I gave 4 stars. And it’s expensive. And want to warn people away from the messy egg unless you know it’s your thing!
