My son attended weekend courses at Canvastone Children’s Art School in 2014-15 at the age of 11. From day one, Penny and Terry were kind, welcoming and patient. Dalton learned various skills of painting and soapstone carving, all of which are still in my house. He enjoyed the classes and I looked forward to the short visits, as well as his finished products. We moved to Texas in 2015, and carried his artwork there and back to Calgary in 2016. The soapstone bear carving is one of my favorite pieces. Christmas 2024, Dalton gifted me a soapstone carving kit and his remains an inspiration to this day. I have found a new hobby that has been both enjoyable and therapeutic. I had some questions on finishing, so phoned them. They still remember us and we quickly caught up. Our conversation was like we had not missed one of the 521 weekends since we walked out of their school with that bear. As nice and patient as I remember, they provided answers to the many questions I had and went above and beyond, suggesting I make contact with a mentor of theirs living in Calgary. They reached out to him as well and all on the same day, Allan and I ended up in the phone together. As nice and welcoming of a person as the MacInnis’, we are scheduled to meet tomorrow. I look forward to the conversation and advice, and a new found friendship. Penny also suggested I swing by and finish my works at their school. I will stop by one day, and likely attend a class myself, with amazing instructors but most of all, lifelong friends.
Our family has been part of this art studio for many years. My oldest child, who is now twenty, first attended about fifteen years ago, and my youngest daughter is still a student today. This place has been a source of comfort, stability, and inspiration for all of us. My children have grown remarkable artistic skills here, but even more importantly, they have learned to use art as a form of self expression and self care during very difficult times. The environment is always safe, supportive, and thoughtfully managed, including careful attention to dust and particulate so that everyone can work comfortably. The owner has always taken the time to connect personally, and truly cares about every student. The range of classes is wonderful, and the special opportunities beyond the regular lessons have been unforgettable. My kids have been able to take part in amazing projects such as sculpture building and even book illustrations. This studio has been a steady and meaningful part of our lives. It has been an absolute rock for my children for 15 years, and I recommend it with complete confidence. Thank you Canvastone!
Our daughter has been going to Canvastone for 2 years and she loves it. Her drawing and painting skills improve and the paintings and pictures she brought home are awesome. teachers and owner are very welcoming and friendly!
My 10 year old daughter did a soapstone carving class over the summer and loved it! It was her first time and I was so impressed with the quality of her work and the opportunity for her to try something completely different. Penny and her team were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. My daughter felt welcome and safe. I will certainly be enrolling my daughter in again and I’m sure over time we will be trying all the unique classes.
