I have a black dog with black nails. Because of this, trimming her nails can be tricky; it's very difficult to see the quick (the vein in each nail) to avoid cutting it. I have had my dog for 6 years and have opted to have her nails trimmed at the vet each time she needs it rather than risk hurting her, and this has gone well in the past. We just moved to Sacramento, and I needed a new vet to trim my dog's nails. I called Capital Pets and made an appointment with a nice-sounding man, to whom I explained my need for a skillful nail trim on an anxious black-nailed dog. He seemed to understand perfectly. When my dog and I arrived for our appointment today, I explained our purpose again, stressing that I was there because I was afraid a groomer or I would accidentally cut my dog's quick and needed to avoid that. We then spoke to the vet and went over our needs and concerns again. After our vet consult, a tech came and led my dog away. She returned her five minutes later and my dog went under a chair. When the vet tech left the room, my dog walked out and I realized she was leaving bloody paw prints on the floor and had bled a puddle under the chair. I called for help, and when the tech came back she seemed annoyed. She took my dog away again and brought her back again after a few minutes, claiming to have "fixed her feet." I took issue with this situation, but when I brought it up with the vet, the female vet tech yelled at me and told me it's totally normal, nails bleed when you cut them, and it's not her fault she injured my dog because her nails are black and she couldn't see the quick. When I said nails don't bleed - quicks do - and that it's not okay she hurt my dog, she put her hand in my face and said "bye. You need to go." So I did. I went online and filed a complaint with the state licensing board, and now I'm telling all of you. This is the kind of place that will hurt or kill your pet and then refuse to take responsibility.
So Great! Very happy with the care we received. Brought my dog in who was in a very bad state. They diagnosed her with pancreatitis. We did blood work, they sent us home with IV fluids, antibiotics, nausea meds, they did bloodwork. All of this cost me just under $500. It was VERY reasonably priced. Everywhere else wanted half that just to walk in the door. Very kind and understanding care. 10/10 recommend.
Please beware * I brought our beloved cat of 4 years to this vet because his breathing seemed labored . I’d taken him here before but for minor things like shots . When I brought him this last time I was very concerned about his breathing. The vet said he was fine and sent us home . Not after their fee of course . Our beloved Fur Baby passed away a week later of heart failure. His heart was 10 times the size of a regular heart and surrounded with fluid . Our fur baby was suffering . This vet seems to be a shot clinic but anything more serious i’d advise taking your beloved fur baby elsewhere . Unless you don’t mind their ashes sitting in a little box afterwards. Our hearts will forever be broken and this was so preventable had they actually taken it seriously when I brought him in .
I normally don’t leave reviews, but I feel like I need to share this so other pet owners are aware. If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Please, do not bring your pets here. I brought my cat here twice. He was diagnosed with asthma on 8/25 and prescribed antibiotics and Prednisone. The receptionist simply told me when to give the medication and said to call if he vomited or had diarrhea. No one explained what to expect or what warning signs to look for. By 9/1, less than a week later, my cat was in respiratory distress—mouth breathing, nostrils flaring, and visibly struggling with every breath. I rushed him to the ER, where he was put on oxygen for 12 hours and I was quoted nearly $5,000 for care. The ER vet was shocked that he was given Prednisone. They explained that Prednisone is typically used for dogs, while cats with asthma need Prednisolone. Basically in other words, my cat was given the wrong medication. Now that he was switched, he finally began to improve. Of course me being upset, sad and frustrated, I went back to Capital Pets to tell them what had happened and show them all the paperwork and get my money back for being given the wrong medication. The vet was dismissive and unsympathetic, saying, “Well, your cat is better now. What do you want me to do about it?” There was no compassion or accountability. He only refunded me after I demanded it. This wasn’t just a simple mistake—this nearly cost my cat his life. Please think twice before trusting this clinic with your pets.
Seen this Vet a number of times for different dogs. I would recommend him to my family and friends. He has alot of experience and he is a straight shooter. He doesnt try to upsell me on anything. (Like many vets like to do) Prices are also very fair especially compared to everyone else in Sacramento. Will return.
