We were extremely disappointed by how the school, and mainly the teacher, Jane Thomas, treated our kids. Our kids were diligent and serious piano students here. Yet, both of them were kicked out because just one of them has attention issues and has age appropriate behavior for a 7 year old. Instead of being a real teacher and meeting our son where he was at, he was shamed and made to feel like a bad person, when he is actually a sensitive and sweet kid, now deeply hurt by an adult whom I would never allow in his presence knowing what I know now. Please be warned that the teachers here are clearly not trained in how to treat kids well, and very possibly need some training on racial sensitivity (our kids are mixed race), and could end up doing long-term emotional damage. The administrative staff also demonstrated a total lack of care in this area when they supported the teacher being hurtful and giving our kids a severely negative experience that they now associate with their overall music education. They were not given an alternative teacher after we paid for the full semester and after they had been working hard to prepare recital pieces for the end of the semester and were no longer afforded the opportunity to perform.
I am very disappointed in the staff and their lack of response and their lack of consideration when they didn't communicate timely, effectively or efficiently which led to my child not be able to experience an opportunity that he will be to old to experience next year. As the person said on the phone so very uncaring, there is always next year. So, community is NOT an accurate depiction of how this program operates. My son is so disappointed and crushed!
We were searching for a piano teacher in the area for my 7 y/o twins and when we discovered Webster CMS. We were matched with a teacher who specialized in working with younger children and she has been incredible! My girls had no music experience but they are excited each week to go to practice and they work hard to impress their teacher. The venue here is great. There’s a large open area upstairs when you walk in and there are several classrooms on the lower level where instructors teach piano, strings, percussion, you name it. Make sure you ask for the WiFi information because there is no cell service downstairs, and if you have a little one who is considering piano make sure you ask for Mirta Donnelley!
Our children started taking music lessons at Community Music School of Webster University back in 2011. The oldest studied trombone under Dr. Frederickson who was an amazing low brass teacher. As a seasoned educator, he challenged our son to practice diligently and reach higher goals with step by step guidance and patience. Our second child studied clarinet under Katie Myler. I still remember the first lesson with Katie and the stunning transformation of my daughter's playing. Katie is extremely talented in making a complicated piece simple and fun. Her explanation of the ebb and flow of music and the way she would tap her right foot to emphasize certain music sections always made me smile. Our daughter is currently a senior studying clarinet performance in college, still coming back to Katie for summer lessons. Our third child started learning trumpet under Mr. Souza when he was eight years old. From the very beginning, Mr. Souza taught my son how crucial it was to nail the first note of a piece and made him start over and over until it was perfect. Not only has our son improved his trumpet playing, he learned the importance of discipline in life from his trumpet teacher. Our youngest is still studying flute under Carolyn Hoyer today. Because of multiple children taking lessons, scheduling became a challenge at times. Carolyn was always so helpful and accommodating. Countless times, Carolyn would overcome the nightmare of traffic and parking to come just to teach one lesson, even after an injury or a medical procedure. My daughter blossomed in her flute playing under Carolyn's guidance. What an excellent team of highly qualified and dedicated music educators!
Our son has been coming here since he was a little guy in their Kindermusik program. We enjoy our music class together!
