Me & my Family move and travel a lot around the US. This is the first time I have an issue with a BJJ instructor for KIDS classes!! Based on my own experience, Nick might be good with adults, but not so much with kids. There is no structure, no organization, no respect, very casual BJJ where they don't encourage kids to wear the Gi, they don't bow on/off the matt and he does not encourage safety and control. If you are looking for a good professional etiquette BJJ for the KIDS, this is not it. He's way is more bully' style, for grown adults that's perfect, we are talking about KIDS here, which I am not interested in Paying somebody to teach kids bullying is fine! Several times i saw kids hitting each other's heads, faces, smacking, bullying. Boys are rough, but discipline and respect are two of the most important things in MMA. Several times I expressed my concerns not only to Nick but to one of the managers. And nothing was getting better. Last time i spoke with Nick he started yelling like a maniac in front of other people and my son!! Calling him a liar and other stuff?! What is this place?! At a point where my own Son told me 'I don't want to go there anymore mom'. He is 9yrs old, and he has been in MMA classes since he was 4, we are not rookies on this. My husband also takes MMA classes there and I was getting ready to also start GYM. So they not only lost one, but 3 members at once. No professionalism, they could care less, talk to each other about the members and they do Not take care of them as a business should. Another guy who looks like he just got out of college called Max or something, so unprofessional as well. Very disappointed.

Haven’t been a member for years and still get endless (3x today) spam texts for paid classes or programs from Genesis. No amount of unsubscribing or blocking will stop them.

I went here for 4 months and could no longer afford it. I went in to cancel my membership and tell them it’s no longer financially feasible. I was then told about a $200 cancellation fee which I know with certainty I wasn’t told about when signing up. I never missed a payment and felt like I was getting a slap in the face. Chris the manager did me no favors in saying “$200 is cheaper than $800” ( the rest of my 12 month term with them) very bad experience with them. I would not recommend this gym to anyone. This is the only bad review I’ve ever written for a business but I’m so upset at their poor quality business practices I could not ignore it.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction is lead by a first degree black belt Nick Berens. With certifications as a professional referee as well. That means extra foresight for safety and proper training. Curriculum is structured by a monthly theme. There is also a review day incase you missed a class during the week. Program is a part of a large affiliated network that has many contacts. So the beauty is the random visitors. The program is mostly relaxed theme with more emphasis on learning vs large warm up time. So easier to do many classes especially if you work a full time job. My only complaint, is the location is deep in the city.

The Genesis on west 13th is awesome for more reasons then your typical gym. I go in to train Muay Thai or kickboxing mostly but I pop in on Brazilian jui jitsu(bjj) and mma as well with JMTK. I’m even thinking about enrolling my kids in the kids jui jitsu classes. The mma program has awesome coaches and produces great athletes under the instruction of Andy Zerger and Nick Berens. Andy has helped me with my Muay Thai and kickboxing journey since the start and has actually helped me reach some goals in the last year or two. I started wondering if I’d ever actually fight and put it on my to do list. Thanks to Andy I built the confidence and learned some of the skills to make that a possibility. In the last year I had my first 2 smoker fights and am debating on trying the next level this year. Andy is always watching and offering advice based on years of training and some pretty awesome accomplishments too. Continuing to try and grow myself I also train bjj from time to time. Nick is an awesome bjj instructor and is always looking out for us while on the mats. Wether seeking advice on upcoming potential bouts or asking about a technique In jui jitsu Nick is more then willing to help. Overall the gym and all the people there have helped me to see a better version of myself and I can’t say thank you enough. Thanks Andy, Nick, all the other members, staff and personal trainers(ask for my guy Ace Rider when you go check out this gym and get a tour).
