The team of Gabriel, Guillermo, Adsemi, Carlos, Misael, Candido, and Victor all did an excellent job leveling our backyard, installing pavers, and installing our pavilion. The price was very competitive; their price which included a pavilion was comparable to other contractors' price for only the leveling and patio. The only cons were some hiccups that included an unannounced delivery, the project got delayed over and over again, and some minor communication issues.
Grasstains did a large remodel of our backyard with a huge amount of hardscape including pavers, an outdoor kitchen, and a gazebo. The team did a great job from start to finish. The people from Grasstains were professional and courteous and although the job took a bit longer than we expected, they really delivered on what we wanted.
Our entire lot was a blank slate, mulch and gravel, 3 levels in the back, a huge multi level mess in the front. Grasstains worked impeccably and tirelessly for many months to design, build, install everything into a complete dog friendly oasis! We are so grateful to Matt, Sally, Stetson, Gerardo, Gabriel, Candido, Miscel, Jay, Chris, Guillermo, Carlos, and Aosemi for everything! We are keeping them on for maintenance. Creative design geniuses and the hardest workers I have ever seen. Even in the 100 degree summer heat, they finished ahead of schedule and it’s so beautiful.
We couldn't be happier with our decision to work with Grasstains! From our very first meeting several months ago, their team was incredibly patient and supportive. As complete landscaping newbies, we had a vague vision for our front yard, backyard, and parking strip, and they expertly guided us through the entire process. The initial site visit and design they provided were immensely helpful, giving us a clear picture of the possibilities and empowering us to decide how to proceed. We ultimately hired them for the full project, and they were fantastic. The design process was iterative and collaborative, and the demo and build-out were handled with professionalism. Communication was very good throughout the project. While we had a few different points of contact which was occasionally confusing, it may have been a result of our own extended timeline. One piece of advice for future clients: work closely with their project coordinator on any city permits. We had a small challenge with a street tree removal permit, and ensuring that is secured before work begins is key. Where the Grasstains team truly excelled was in their creative problem-solving and flexibility. They used our initial plans as a foundation but found brilliant ways to improve upon them. For example, they proactively redesigned the sprinkler system layout, which actually saved us money from our discretionary budget! In another instance, after leveling the ground, a gap was exposed in an existing garden bed. Without even being asked, the team found matching cedar, cut it to size, and patched it perfectly. It's that kind of above-and-beyond service that truly sets them apart. They were also incredibly responsive and accommodating, allowing us to expand the project scope to include our front yard, which now has a beautiful layout that we absolutely love. Overall, we recommend Grasstains to anyone looking for a dedicated and creative landscaping partner.
Update [January 2025]: After posting this review, the owner reached out personally to address our concerns. They have since completed all outstanding items, even going above and beyond by adding additional mulch and adjusting sprinklers/drip lines. We appreciate their commitment to making things right. Original Review: Our experience with Grasstains was mixed. While they were capable of completing our landscaping project, the process revealed some project management challenges that we feel are important to share: Pros: -The vision they create is wonderful and their designer is able to effectively conceptualize needs during intake -Workers & laborers were professional, kind, and courteous when on site -When scope adjustments or change orders were needed, they were good partners in finding solutions -Quality of completed work is excellent - we are truly happy with how our space has transformed -When issues were raised, they ultimately made things right Cons: -Initial project planning had gaps - some basic elements (concrete removal, irrigation specs, entire back area, front street lawn) were missed in initial scope for phase 1 -Communication was sometimes inconsistent during the project -Required more oversight than expected The pricing structure and project management style seems better suited for high-budget clients who want to give creative freedom without concern for costs. For budget-conscious homeowners looking for precise quotes and careful project management, this may require more active involvement than expected. For those considering Grasstains: --The end result will be beautiful Get everything in writing, especially changes -Build in a budget buffer -While project management had some challenges, they stand behind their work and make things right -The design vision and quality of work is excellent
