What makes visiting a book shop so much better than idly scrolling through Amazon? Well, walking through the door of Heron Books, fairly sure you don’t intend buying anything but still enjoying a browse, until your eyes come to rest on a book you just know you must buy. In this case, Letters to Gil by Malik Al Nasir. Not sure if I knew there was such a book, although I was aware of Malik’s link to Gil, anyway a few hours later I’m voraciously making my way through a book that I now can’t imagine not having in my possession. And THAT is more or less the magic of a visit to a beautiful book shop like this.
cute book store! Harry had a lot of recommendations and was super friendly to us! Looking forward to visiting after the booker prize is announced 😃😃
A gorgeous book shop! Popped in with the dog this week to get a book to delve into on a a rainy afternoon. Harry kindly enquired what I was currently reading/enjoying and recommended me a few to try. Left with one of his recommendations and I’m loving it so far. Thank you!
This bookshop has moved from its former location inside Clifton Arcade. It is now on Regent Street, not far (2mins walk), in more spacious premises, since Feb 2025. I’ve just (Aug 2025) succeeded in updating the ‘Location’ info on Google Maps so it no longer says it’s in the arcade. To me this is everything a bookshop should be: a diverse but curated selection, with knowledgeable staff happy to give suggestions or say why a book might suit you or the person you’re buying for. If you are a regular reader/gifter it’s also worth getting their newsletter, via their website. Heron Books has always had a superb selection of children’s books; the shop now has a basement, so this is now a larger collection. Everything is pristine and thoughtfully laid out. A gem.
One of my favourite indie bookshops in Bristol. Lizzie and Harry are absolutely wonderful and it’s always a treat to pop in and chat with them about books. You are always bound to leave with new and eclectic book recommendations you otherwise wouldn’t have heard of if it wasn’t for them. And that’s part of the experience! From the lovely events that they host to the fantastic selection of books up for grabs, this is a perfectly curated bookshop in Clifton.
