Phenomenal bookstore, beautifully laid out, eclectic stock and a really interesting selection of comic books. This is a superlative shop, a destination for bibliophiles, and people who like stationary and comics, magazines and bookish literary items. Really superb.
It’s open when it’s open - a quirk you will either find charming and refreshing, or deeply irritating. Either way, it’s worth a few attempts to get inside. A decent collection of books across many topics, staff who seem to know where everything is (thanks to their efforts to organise the stock), free fruit (kind attempts to nourish both customers’ minds and bodies?), and the lovely cocoon of aged lignin. If you want to sit down in a comfy armchair (or anywhere, really) with a flat white to browse the latest bestsellers you’re in the wrong place. But if you’re avoiding ‘Buy One Get One Half-Price’ stickers, celeb bookclubs, people filming things for BookTok, and hoping to find something completely foreign and fascinating to you, then cross your fingers and come on down.
This place has a fantastic range of books, all types and genres, I always try and visit as I collect a variety of niche titles that this place sells at a competitive price! And I feel like any review that doesn’t acknowledge the staff and their diverse knowledge and backgrounds would truly go amiss. HOWEVER as of late the irregular opening hours and the offensive volume of music has caused myself and many others to give this otherwise underrated shop a miss. I was in here earlier today and I honestly felt so over stimulated and nervous from the noise, being someone who suffers from poor hearing it made it impossible to concentrate and made me feel so disregulated I had to leave without buying anything.
This is an authentic shop which is to be appreciated, however I did feel quite on edge as there were so many signs telling you what to do/not do. Some totally fair enough but some a bit much, there was a bit of a bad/grumpy vibe about the place to be honest. The books were quite expensive for second-hand ones too but I imagine a good place for collectors etc but not somewhere I think I'll personally return to. It's cash only and I'm told you're offered fruit when making a purchase which is a nice touch.
This place is a must. I would stay there an entire day if i could. You must go and check out their archives. They’ve got soooo many valuable books, magazines, newspapers, post cards, maps…you name it! The owner of the shop is an old man, it’s a family business, and he runs the shop with his daughter. They are the sweetest! I got the private eye magazine, and they even gave me a discount! The lady gave me some freshly picked green chilies, from her garden
