Unprofessional, uneducated, and not communicative. The only trained dance teachers there are is Sara and Donna the rest and majority of classes are taught by kids with no experience. This studio should only be for those who want to just dance and not learn technique to progress and challenge themselves in a dance career or future. If you are wanting to be an instructor, I would highly recommend not. Staff will pick on students AND parents. I took 2 adult classes last year and when applied to teach dance after dancing at Nice and Pivot 15 years combined, danced at Salem High School, and went to college for dance, I was told I was not consistent when showing up to class all because I was out in the fall and winter due to an emergency SURGERY in my STOMACH. That was what cost me the job. But forget having teachers who have tenique and experience, they will just have teachers who have no time for teaching and will teach only for money, not the love of dance.
As an adult trying dance for the first time, I have really enjoyed my time at Pivot! I tried Hip Hop and Jazz and felt so welcomed by the group of ladies in class. If you're thinking of trying it out, I highly recommend the Hip Hop classes -- they are fun, energetic, and a great workout. You'll have a blast!
I was a late bloomer and didn't start dancing until I was 14. It was then that discovered I LOVED dancing and I continued lessons for the next 6 years. Fast forward many, many, MANY years.. many, many, MANY pounds.. and three kids later. Dance took a backseat as adulting, motherhood, and life happened. Last year, I decided to take one adult dance class. I wanted to test the waters of dancing in my "new" body so I returned to my old studio (which was under new ownership). Pivot Dance Center prides itself on being the "very first dance studio in Hampton Roads to partner with Parents Against Bullying and bring awareness to the mental and physical dangers of bullying." It really hit me how special this studio was when I vocally body shamed myself on picture day. Without hesitation, the staff and my classmates counteracted my negative self-talk and lifted me up with positive affirmations! Maybe it's just me, but even as an adult I (still) have irrational fears of being judged and ridiculed. I have experienced NONE of that at PDC. The PDC family has welcomed me with arms wide second and they have helped me to build confidence. This studio has really helped me to appreciate the things I can do and challenged me to work hard at the things I was able to do um-teen years ago. Mrs. Elyssa (owner) is super sweet. I love her energy and how she coaches ALL the dancers! She has been wonderful and supportive from our first interaction where I bombarded her with my millions of questions at my initial phone call to this summer when I struggled in a tap class (that she was observing but not teaching) and she hopped up to help me out! Aside from feeling at home and uplifted at the studio, the classes are SO. MUCH. FUN. The end-of-year recital/show has all the familiar hype and that “I miss this” feeling when it’s all over. If you’re reading this and have the slightest consideration of taking a dance class.. come join us! You WILL NOT regret it!
My daughter just finished her first year at PDC and is signed up for her second year. We both love it there and she is so excited to start dancing again. The teachers are great, the teacher assistants are awesome, Laura the front staff worker is so sweet, and the owner is so funny and kind. Everybody is so encouraging and hypes eachother up. I tell all my friends about this place and encourage them to sign up too. Oh and they also do "school spirit" days sometimes and I think that is so cute and the kids have a lot of fun with that as well.
My daughter loves this studio and so do I. The teachers and students treat each other with a lot of respect and I recently found out that they are the FIRST anti-bullying studio which I believe was a really good step to take. My daughter always wants to go to dance even when she can’t or is sick and when she misses it she can ask anybody their to help her catch up and they gladly will. She is also apart of there company inside of the studio called the Legends which is really nice to have. Pivot Dance Center is my daughter’s second home and second family. We love it! If you are looking for a studio to join then you should really join Pivot Dance center!
