Rustic Root offers a laid-back, approachable dining experience in downtown- Gaslamp District of San Diego; with a full-service bar and a lively, welcoming atmosphere. Visited during the holiday season, the space was appropriately decorated, adding warmth without excess. Service was attentive and accommodating, particularly with dietary requests, including a successful gluten-free substitution confirmed directly with the kitchen. The cauliflower dish was underwhelming, served as florets rather than a composed preparation and lacking depth despite its richness from Greek yogurt and chili oil. The wedge salad fared better—fresh and well executed, though slightly overdressed. The macaroni and cheese stood out for its execution. Prepared with gluten-free noodles cooked precisely al dente, it was creamy, balanced, and thoughtfully prepared. Overall, Rustic Root succeeds as a comfortable, reliable option, driven by solid service and well-executed comfort dishes with a festive holiday ambiance that brightened our spirits!
A great location, menu and service. Second floor is especially nice. Appetizer menu is superb and very reasonably priced. Garlic meatballs and shrimp were fabulous. The beef tip entree was also great
A little disappointed— style over substance? We were excited for a Saturday brunch on the rooftop here. The menu is small, but some tasty options with reasonable pricing. We had a reservation, and a table was available upon arrival. The vibe was pretty chilled, but it was getting busier as some bachelorette parties arrived. We ordered the BLT Benedict and pork belly kimchi fried rice…they came out pretty quickly, but both arrived barely warm, and our lattes showed up halfway through the meal as they had to get more espresso pods (not fresh ground, sadly). We saw lots of fun-looking cocktails and mimosas being served around us, which we would probably try if we go again. We were there at 11am and it seemed like only one waiter (Jesse) was working the whole floor like a pro and being very friendly despite being busy, while there were 2 or 3 individuals working host stations. As a result, they were slow to greet us and felt a little rushed to take drinks and food orders right away. As an observation, and consistent with other recent reviews around service, it seems management can’t/aren’t able to get staffing levels right, impacting the overall experience.
Amazing service and even better food. I come here whenever I am in San Diego it’s my favorite restaurant and I always clear my plate (rare occurrence)!!! Drinks are lovely and the non-alcoholic options taste great. Very attentive and friendly staff even on a busy night. I was there for a special occasion and our server kindly treated the table to a free dessert. I have never had a bad dish here.
Went here for a friend date night and cool vibes. Found the restaurant on a IG page and just had to try it. The restaurant decor is amazing, the vibes are good, food is great, and the location is centrally located in downtown San Diego. The drinks was a 8/10. The food was great I got the lobster pasta 8/10. My friend ordered the crab cakes 3x 10/10. Jambalaya was a 6/10 and I say that because the person that ordered it is from New Orleans and it was his rating. Overall great place and a must go.
