Loving visiting and seeing all the unique items they have. Has something for everyone. Definitely worth a visit.
Overall a good experience. I've been to a few of these type of vintage collectives, with many individual shops within. This one is slightly smaller than the others (though still many things available to see) and perhaps becuse of that there is a more intimate feeling and several stall owners were present and enquired if I needed help. One small criticism I will make is that a great deal of items in many of the stalls are behind glass, compared to the other places I've been at which do also have some but not, say, 50-70% of the items being offered. I understand that valuables need to be secured and perhaps they've dealt with issues int he past but... how do I say this... in quite a few stores, and one in particular that had a lot of Chinese/Asian "antiques"... I'm fairly certain that they didn't really need to be. Again, regarding the Chinese "antiques" specifically (I'm a collector so can only claim some expertise in this category), a lot of the ascertaining of authenticity and value is related to being able to see the object from up close and all angles (footrim etc). I have a feeling that other types of collectables might be the same which sort of makes this place a bit difficult since it is annoying having to summon an employee and having them hovering next to you while you examine it. Now if they were true antiques - as this particular Asian art store seems to think they are based on the prices - it would be understandable. However just based on what I could see behind the glass, I honestly doubt it and am quite certain the majority of their wares are more in the category of vintage/decorative only. Now there's nothing wrong with items of this category, I have quite a few in my home, but only if priced appropriately. There were actually two stores in this place that sold quite a few Chinese wares, one was fairly reasonably priced and the other was really, really not. I'm still rating the place overall highly since again overall it was a great experience and there was also a bookshop in the back that sold quite a lot of non-fiction books (prices again on the higher end, but quite a good collection covering a wide range of topics, in particular for me those to do with Art History which is rather hard to find).
Southern Antiques is an antique & art deco lovers paradise. Connor is friendly, helpful & very knowledgeable concerning both antiques & art deco pieces. The two ladies are helpful, friendly & constantly acknowledged all the customers The antiques & art deco pieces are a feast for the eyes. I spent over 3 hours admiring as many pieces as I could. However, i only absorbed about a 1/4 of the stock. The in-house Cafe was appealing to my stomach & tired legs. I left Southern Antiques very happy with my purchases & content with what I paid for them. I'll be back before 2025 Christmas day to purchase a salesman's minute sawing machine, 2 antique glass light shades & what else i can afford.
Wow, what an amazing place. If I had the time I could walk around this store for hours looking at all of the antiques and collectibles. Everywhere you look there is something fascinating that probably has a great story attached to it. The Cafe at the front is also very good.
I love this place so much and I keep going back, theres so many unique items and collectables to look through! The Cafe is also good and the workers are so sweet 🤍
