Ya know what? This Spec's location has a ton of staff who are helpful, a nice selection across alcohol types, and prices are decent. Really my only complaint is the parking lot which is awful but I won't subtract a star for that. (Also, their Scotch selection was amazing.)
After a work event, my friend had suggested we stop at Spec’s together to get a drink of our choice to end the long weekend before we both went to our SEPARATE homes. I chose a couple wine bottles and my friend had picked up a few beers, as we made our way to checkout, I happened to set my things down first to checkout. It was about five minutes before close but they were still open, the lady working at the front seemed very ready to use the shift be over, which is understandable, but it definitely showed in her demeanor. She asked to see my ID and as I recently had my wallet stolen I am getting a replacement but still have photo of front and back of my VALID ID. The lady said they couldn’t allow that as an acceptable form of ID to make a purchase, which was a bit annoying but I wasn’t going to argue if that is a policy. What I do have an issue with is that she told my friend (who was a completely SEPARATE customer that came to this business on his own free will in his OWN VEHICLE) that he couldn’t make his purchase either under the circumstance of “being together with me…” Even though I had informed the lady that we were NOT in fact “together” and that we are both our own separate individuals that walked into this establishment, who just HAPPEN to know each other. Informing this rude lady of all this information didn’t seem to click however, which in hindsight, given her lack of education toward the words coming out of my mouth, now makes a little more sense. I felt bad for my friend as he had nothing to do with me not having my ID, as I said, two completely different people who drove to this establishment and who were both leaving separately to our own homes. I suggest a little more training toward employees on the actual policies of “refusal of services or goods by association” as I had to enforce that policy at one of my previous jobs regularly. However, in this circumstance, this policy shouldn’t have been enforced, given that it wouldn’t hold water facing the fact of reality of the situation.
I don't feel like giving this particular location a one-star review because of my past experience with other Spec's stores. I had abandoned this location many months ago due to poor management, and what I considered questionable hires for front facing staff. Tonight's experience with the last straw. After a routine stroll around the store and the intended purchase of a single bottle of gin I was finally summoned to the far north register. Things went well for a moment, she was pleasant enough. Unfortunately, when she dipped into the till to make change for a $100 bill things became stupid. After "management" triple checking my crisp $100 bill she started to attempt to make change. When the cash drawer opened it looked as though someone had dumped a small sack of cash into it. No order, no organization, bills were crumpled folded and barely contained. And once I was handed 2 ones, 5 fives, 1 ten and 2 twenties in change on a purchase of less than $13.00 I guess I'm just done paying cash, I'm done with Spec's, and I'm done with being waited on by the individuals that spent more time on their "hairstyle" and body flare than they did on learning their math skills in elementary school. "Her jokes about how bad the cash in her looked was an obvious ploy" I hope that chick enjoys her $10. It's not enough to buy a bucket of chicken and beans. This is nobody's fault but my own... ~ moving on
