While in the area we gathered with friends to do an activity together and decided on an escape room. Our teens have experienced escape rooms previously and this was my 2nd time visiting one. Escape rooms allow for you to be intuitive and really focus on the task at hand as well as connect with others in your group. Exit Strategy by Tar Heel Escapes is conveniently located on Franklin near tons of restaurants and shopping. We parked in the lot underground. Upon arrival Will our Gamemaster was very welcoming and bubbly. We were provided the house rules and made ourselves comfortable before locking in. We chose The Raiders of The Lost Temple Indiana Jones themed game. The room was decorated on theme with lots of props and the level of difficulty presented more challenging than expected. We enjoyed the puzzles and started off really strong. However, 60 minutes is not adequate time for the difficult challenges this game presented. It just isn't possible. Will was very helpful with providing us hints over our walkie talkie. They also took time to go over parts of the game we may have missed to assist in finishing. Despite this, I love a good challenge and thought this was a great way to connect with each other. The room was not very large, so I would say 4 people is really pushing it. Try it for yourself.
We came for a date night and our gamemaster Will was awesome! They did a great job explaining the rules and making sure we got enough help without going over the top. We'll definitely be coming back!
Want to start by saying that we've done several escape rooms in the area and never have experienced such a negative attitude from the gamemaster giving clues, Sara. We were welcomed in the beginning by another guy who was accommodating and friendly. However, during the game when asking for clues, we were spoken to with a very demeaning and impatient attitude. We honestly thought maybe it was supposed to be a character as part of the game to be rude. At the end of the game, we were greeted with a cold attitude and unenthusiastic replies to questions. It was jarring to be treated like we were stupid, therefore speechlessly walked out. After calling back to politely share our experience and requested to speak with a manager, it was disheartening to learn Sara was the present manager. Even after sharing how we were treated, there was no attempt to rectify and left with call being treated short yet again. There is no excuse for someone like this to be working in an experience where enthusiasm and professionalism is key. Escape rooms are made to have a fun time. The room was well designed, but unfortunately this completely ruined it.
To start on a positive note, the place was accommodating when we arrived a few minutes late, and the guy who welcomed us was polite and kind — we really appreciated that. We did the Raiders room and thought it was well set up and decently challenging. Our poor experience started when we asked for clues. The person running our game, Sarah, was impatient and lacked enthusiasm from the start. We’ve done many escape rooms before, and the game masters usually make the experience fun by politely redirecting and keeping the energy up. This time, it felt more like we were bothering her by being there. We ignored it at first hoping it was only something over the walkie talkie but she was just as short when she met us at the end. We reached out afterward to share our concerns, only to find out that Sarah is actually the manager — which was very disappointing. The overall experience felt flat and frustrating when it could have been so much more enjoyable. We hope that going forward this concern is addressed so that people can have a better and more enjoyable experience than we did.
We had an amazing time at Tar Heel Escapes! We chose the Shipwreck Surprise room, and it was a blast. My wife and family joined me, and we all agreed it was one of the most fun and creative escape rooms we've done. The room was filled with unique surprises and special features that kept us on our toes the entire time. It struck a great balance between being challenging and entertaining. Highly recommend for families or groups looking for a fun adventure in the area!
