If you are searching for the best tattoo artist near Los Angeles, I can confidently say that John Smith at The Raven and The Wolves is hands down the top choice. In my opinion, John Smith is not only the best tattoo artist in Los Angeles, but the best tattoo artist in the United States. My wife, Chelsea, just completed an intense 4-day tattoo sitting with John, and the entire experience was exceptional from start to finish. His level of professionalism, attention to detail, and artistic skill are unmatched. Long sessions can be exhausting, but John made the process comfortable, positive, and smooth the entire time. He was incredibly kind, patient, and easy to talk to, which makes a huge difference when you’re spending multiple full days in the chair. The quality of his work speaks for itself—clean lines, flawless shading, and a true mastery of tattoo artistry. If you are looking for a top-rated tattoo shop near Los Angeles or a world-class tattoo artist in Southern California, The Raven and The Wolves should be your first stop, and John Smith should be your artist. From customer care to artistic excellence, John Smith delivers a five-star experience. If you want the best tattoo artist in LA, the best realism / custom tattoo artist near me, or simply the best tattoo artist in the USA, in my opinion, no one compares to John Smith at The Raven and The Wolves.
This was my first tattoo. I spent a long time trying to find an artist who would listen to me and help me recreate the image that I had in my head that I’ve wanted tattooed for near a decade now. Everything about my experience here was wonderful. Eran was fantastic at answering all my first-timer questions upon initial correspondence regarding the tattoo. Andrew was a dream to work with. Listened to my ideas and politely told me what would work and what wouldn’t. He walked me through all parts of the process, made sure I was okay through the pain, and was easy to talk to! I thought I would feel alienated and out of place in a tattoo studio given that I walked in with absolutely no ink, but everyone in the shop who came by to look at the piece was so nice and welcoming. I don’t think I could have imagined a better first experience. I felt safe, seen, and valued. My husband now has the itch to get himself another tattoo (a skeletal jester), and we will likely return for that piece, as well.
The Raven and The Wolves serves as a tattoo studio and art gallery. Located within the Long Beach Promenade, the studio is discreetly tucked away on the second floor of one of the buildings. It may be a bit difficult to find as the only street-side markings/advertisement is a sandwich board outside the exterior gate. You must use the callbox and be buzzed into the building before ascending the staircase. The shop is virtually impossible to miss from there. While making it a bit of a challenge to locate, it does say something about security. The studio is a single room business that can host 9+ artists at any given time. Walk-ins are welcome, however, appointments are strongly encouraged as every piece is given a diligent amount of care and attention. There is a simple waiting area that (at the time of this writing) includes two couches and a large chessboard, as well as a small kitchen for water, coffee, etc. A unique aspect of this business is how their artists mix classic art styles (painting, sculpting, sketching, etc.) into their work as to experiment and grow their individual skills. Collaborative works of art between artists happen on occasion, where each artist will contribute to a single, large painting. Since it doubles as an art gallery, there are also occasional art shows that are open to the public to browse, socialize, and purchase works of art. I received my first tattoo here - a large sleeve, extending from my shoulder to my forearm - and felt at ease, heard, and part of the process. While I originally know my artist (John Hudic) from outside of the studio, my observations of the other artists are that they enjoy to joke with each other, inspect and praise each others' work, have friendly conversation with clients, and inspire trust in their craft. You can expect full-service when booking with this crew.
I met with a guest artist here to start a sleeve. This location is a bit tricky to find, but the space is super cool. It was my first tattoo and I was met with lots of friendly artists and clients alike. Good vibes. There is a lot of great artwork too. I wouldn't hesitate to start a new project here in the future.
Wow. I came here and got two tattoos from Andy kim, he was so kind to me, he gave me design advice, waited enough time for me while I decided on several designs, understood the pain, and gave me happy memories. The most important thing is that my tattoo was also completed beautifully. he is very talented! Soon I'm going to do two more tattoos with him. Thanks Andy!
