Staff christmas party. The setting is fun - accessed by a lane way, dimly lit, weird and wonderful props accent the walls. On a regular night, I think it could be a great vibe and I'd like to return and give it a second chance. However, the service at our function was poor, about an hour in we'd been served a chicken skewer or two and some bruschetta. One round with the platter and the remaining food was shoved on a table in the corner out of view of most guests. Once these things have been sitting for a while, few will risk a bite in warm weather. We had to ask the staff to clear stacks of glasses from tables. And throughout the night also did so ourselves. At some point arancini balls must have done the rounds, we found them sitting around later on. A couple of hours in a more substantial and quite delicious beef slider platter was served. These did go down well. The staff seemed overwhelmed, but I found one friendly bartender, his chat was really great, funny and cheerful despite the many negatives on the night. The DJ who has promised rockabilly dance tunes failed to deliver and after some comments to turn it down (the acoustics aren't great for chat) and a few requests for different music he crankily packed up his gear and after a heated discussion, left.
Disappointing experience at the Underground Jazz Bar Despite buying tickets online, there was no ticket check at the door, and the venue was severely overcrowded. We couldn't even get a good view of the stage or hear the music properly. It felt like the venue let in way more people than they should have, and it was clear that ticketing wasn't being enforced. Traveled a long way for this, and it was a letdown. Considering making a refund request. Maybe this venue isn't suited for ticketed events? Wouldn't recommend as is.
Found this little gem, best post dinner location so far in Newcastle. The music volume is just right so you can hear it AND talk to the people that you are with without shouting. Drinks were great and well priced. Service was quick and friendly. Booths were comfortable to sit in and with more space than other similar venues. Definitely worth a try.
Went for after dinner cocktails on a Friday evening around 9:30pm. Great vibe, cocktails were interesting and tasty, jazz DJ was great. Awesome spot if you want somewhere with cool vibes but quiet enough you can still chat amongst yourselves.
This venue has been around for years but more recently the new owner completely renovated it into a stylish underground speak-easy style bar. A tight but atmospheric set up with live music ranging from Jazz to tribute bands. One of my favourite haunts in Newcastle! Superb drinks served professionally with friendly service. Gray food too!
