What an absolute treasure in the heart of Edinburgh! The building itself is stunning—beautifully designed and in a perfect location. From the moment you step inside, you feel like you’ve entered a sanctuary for book lovers. You could easily spend days here. Every nook and cranny reveals something new, and the atmosphere invites you to linger, explore, and discover. The selection is second to none, with shelves overflowing in every genre imaginable, from timeless classics to the latest releases. The customer service is equally remarkable—warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about books. Whether you’re searching for something specific or just wandering, the staff make the experience feel personal and welcoming. Topping & Company isn’t just a bookstore—it’s an experience. A place where time slows down, curiosity thrives, and every visit feels like a gift.

Topping is nice to look at, but not particularly nice to experience. The massive selection of books will appeal to readers who already know exactly what they’re looking for, but I found it overwhelming and would have appreciated more curation. The space also feels very cramped, with narrow passageways and not nearly enough seating to comfortably browse or linger. It was essentially impossible to look through the graphic novels section without constantly stepping aside to let other customers pass. With more curation, space to maneuver, and additional seating, it could be a much more enjoyable place to explore.

What a gorgeous book store! I have been to other locations of this store, so I knew the selection was good, but this topped everything for me! SO many books in general, and as always so many signed and special editions. And to be able to climb a ladder to grab the book you need?! Pure happiness.

Accessible bookstore that opens till late in the evening. Has plenty of signed books if that is what you are into! Bookstore is also brilliantly laid out on two levels and well sorted by genres so books are easy to browse based on what you’re interested in.

Walked past here everyday for a week and loved the building and loved it more when I finally entered. Beautiful selection of books, some signed and others not. Ladders and bookshelves = happiness. Helpful staff in locating what you need. Do mingle, there are spaces to read!
