In this day of big-box stores where you can buy almost anything except service and support, it's a pleasure to find a place where people know what they are doing. This is the case with Above and Beyond Computers in the Mount Lebanon Shops at 300 Mt. Lebanon Blvd. On the advice of friends, we first went to "A and B" when my wife had a problem with her laptop. The owner, Nate, quickly diagnosed the problem and within two days had her machine up and running again. (He took it home with him and worked on it during his "free" time.) So, when my computer locked up this past weekend, there was only one place I would take it. I thought I'd have to make an appointment, but Nate said he would be there from 1:30 to 7:00 so I should stop by. He'd see what he could do. Just like the first time, he quickly identified the problem and explained what had happened. He then wrote out a very clear set of directions for me to take home. Following them, I quickly found the "key" I needed to unlock my computer--and it worked!!! I then went back to "A and B," and Nate discovered what had happened and gave me hints on how to lessen the possibility it will happen again. Nate is a great guy and combines knowledge, experience, and personality. He's easy to talk to and never makes you feel stupid with what you've done or experienced. He's the only person I will use to solve our home computer problems. And, I will probably go there to purchase a new computer the next time I have to upgrade my system. I will recommend him without reservation to anyone who needs computer help.
Took my alienware laptop here about a year ago due to both GPU and CPU fans failing. Laptop was new as of 2 years prior and well taken care of. I sat with the man while it looked it up and down, he told me it was almost unfixable the fans aren't worth changing. You have to take the entire computer apart, literally said tariffs from China are causing fans to be ridiculous priced? Said it would cost too much for what its worth.. doubting that considering its a 2500$ laptop, I went home founds fans for 50$ shipped very easily from reputable parts company. Now no exaggeration i hate electronics I've never taken apart a computer. More than the battery out of a phone. Yet I was able to in under an hour and a half take the computer apart and replace the fans? Which a year later currently function perfectly. Very disappointing and could never recommend shop after that. One other shop, guy on west lib Ave gave me the same answer prior to this shop. Going to leave same comment on his.
If you gotta get your computer fixed, go here. I had to get my laptop heatsink replaced and I am glad I chose this place. I came in on Friday with the spare heatsink and got my laptop back on Monday morning working better as ever. Nate who owns and runs the shop is friendly and values your time as a customer. He is trustworthy and doesn't shy away from answering questions about your tech problem so you know you are in the right place. He will make sure you are cared for and that you get the best outcome for your tech problem. In a market of planned obsolescence and shrouded practices it is nice to find a local repair shop that's honest, timely, and has fair costs for the work done.
I called in the morning and was told I could stop by that day. Nate was very accommodating and looked up known problems with my Dell computer's touchpad. After doing a bit of research about different people's experiences, it was apparent that this is a known defect and repairs are often short lived. Although I decided not to pursue a repair, Nate was knowledgeable, patient, and generous with his time. I will definitely use Above and Beyond for all of my computer issues.
I wanted to update my review with Nate to continue praising the excellent service I've received. While playing a board game with my family, my husband placed a sugary drink on the table next to my laptop and when my 5yo child saw the cat on the back of the couch, she climbed up and over to get to him, knocking the drink all over it. Unfortunately, the motherboard did not survive. We had to order parts and Nate strongarmed Lenovo to make good on the warranty because they wanted to not simply because I put stickers on it! Because I work from home and the computer is a necessity for me, Nate gave me a loaner! It was good enough to get me through the week waiting for the parts to arrive. Like I said, amazing service! *Original Review from 2021* This team is the best in Pittsburgh. They're very professional but also personal in that they care about you. I dropped my laptop in the summer of 2019 after becoming a new mom, and this damaged the batteries turning my laptop into a ticking time bomb. Now I use my laptop for both full-time work and personal use, and they were so accommodating in my schedule and were able to apply temporary fixes so I could still work while waiting for parts to arrive. Just this past summer, the screen started to pop off. In last year's repair, the screen had to be removed to access the batteries, and it turned out that the adhesive just wasn't working well enough. Nate reapplied adhesive to fix my screen FOR FREE, saying it was attributed to his repair work from over a year earlier. It was an unexpected surprise. I was already planning to be a lifelong loyal supporter of this local business but this kind act really cemented my choice for why I wanted to be.
