Alexandra's drawing class for beginners was great! It was both instructional and open enough to let us try things out without worry that we were doing things the "wrong" way. Her collection of reference books was an added bonus, as it gave me inspiration for my own future art.

Alexandra is an excellent teacher. She encourages and supports your work, but she also challenges you to think more deeply about what you want to do in terms of composition, color and design. She suggested looking at examples of great paintings to get guidance about how the artist created his/her painting. She is very generous with her time and her engagement with the student. She takes you and your work seriously. I really appreciate how she supported my work. I highly recommend her!

Art School 99 is a great place to go if you are a beginner or if you have existing skills. Alexandra helps beginning artists develop foundational skills, such as explaining color theory (critical for mixing paints). She also helps them guide them to their own unique art pieces without prompting them with repetitive templates. If you have existing skills, she is an excellent voice of constructive criticism and provides a space to be around other artists, which can be helpful in motivation and inspiration. Classes and studios are held in her room in a building with many artist lofts. This is neat in itself to see all the other curious things that people have posted in the hallways. I love being in a place that evokes memories of my high school art classes and college design studios.

I had a great experience taking a painting class at Art School 99 in Somerville! Alexandra was an amazing instructor — so encouraging, knowledgeable, and made the process easy to follow. I learned a lot about layering, color, and technique, and left the class feeling much more confident in my painting skills. Thank you, Alexandra and Art School 99, for such a fun and inspiring experience!

Attended a drop-in art class at Art School 99 last Saturday with a friend and had a wonderful and relaxing time. Remembered to bring a sketch book. Alexandra gently directed us on exercises that led to a main mixed media focus project. I found it meditative. I really liked Alexandra’s professional artist guidance and commentary. Three other students were present, and two of them worked on ongoing projects. Atmosphere was relaxed and my friend and I enjoyed some banter. Highly recommend.
