Frankly, this was a weak production. Compared to Houston or New York companies, Austin Ballet feels amateurish. The dancers lack technical precision and clear intentionality, and the overall production is flat and underdeveloped. Classic repertoire is not at an international standard here. Until the technical foundation improves, the company should focus on modern or contemporary works rather than attempting classics they clearly cannot yet deliver. Time to explore acquiring international talent or bringing in better instructors for class curriculum, from what I hear the standards are quite low.
Had not been to see the Nutcracker in 25 years. We enjoyed the show, The performers bowed and the lights came on so we left to beat the crowd outside. Come to find out we missed the entire second act without knowing about the intermission. Ended up being very bummed out the next day which was our fault. I emailed ballet austin just for the sake of mentioning that we hoped the same thing doesn’t happen to anyone else. The staff member emailed me back and after a few emails back and forth ended up getting us seats for the very next Friday. We went again without having to pay a second time and this time stayed for the entire show. It was breathtaking. What a beautiful spectacle to see live. Thank you so much to ballet Austin for your generosity and understanding. Definitely recommend going to anyone thinking about going and want to also start going more ourselves.
Gosh do they make it hard for wheelchair users to buy tickets. The website says they can only be purchased by phone. The phone line says they don’t answer, no tickets can be purchased over the phone, and to go online. I email them and only get an automated response redirecting me to the website where accessible tickets aren’t sold. What a frustrating and disheartening experience. When it’s this hard to just buy a ticket, it feels like you’re not welcome. Update: They reached back out to me via email to purchase tickets over the phone. If you need tickets as a wheelchair user, email them first and they will call you. Looking forward to the show.
We had a magical experience last night at the Nutracker. The show was spectacular, but we knew that beforehand. It’s Ballet Austin after all! The thing is that we made a mistake and bought our tickets from a third party. We were told the emailed tickets would arrive the day before, but we never got them. We went to the ticket office, and were told we had to contact the seller. It wasn’t until then that we realized that we hadn’t purchased directly. To make a long story short, the tickets that we purchased had been canceled by Ballet Austin long ago because the seller violated their no-resell policy. Of course, we were never told, and were facing the possibility of missing the performance. But the staff at the ticket office were incredibly gracious. They explained what happened, asked us to report this to our credit card company, provided written evidence, and gave us two excellent complimentary tickets. It is refreshing to deal with organizations that empower their employees to the point of making decisions like this. We are incredibly grateful for the way they handled it. That’s how you build a loyal customer base. Thank you Ballet Austin for a wonderful experience.
Im so happy i found this place! Who knew at the age of 50 I'd be on pointe!! I have followed the progression from absolute beginners workshop to drop in classes and now pointe. There is no other place i could ever have done this with. A shout out to Miss Lucy! She is an incredible instructor and human. She always makes you feel at home and is always encouraging!
