Located in a beautifully restored historic post office along the Riverwalk, the Briscoe Western Art Museum offers an immersive journey into the art, history, and culture of the American West. With a diverse permanent collection featuring paintings, sculptures, and artifacts, plus engaging temporary exhibits, it's a premier destination for tourists, families, and art enthusiasts. Enjoy the serene outdoor sculpture garden, family-friendly events, and a well-curated gift shop, all in a scrupulously clean and welcoming environment.
Amazing collection of Western Art arranged by theme in various rooms and buildings. There's a parking garage across the street, so it's possible to park very close to the museum to avoid walking long distances to reach the site. Friendly staff with a scrupulously clean facility and nice bathrooms that have diaper changing tables. There's also a gift shop with some interesting items. The model of the Alamo battle that's extremely impressive as well as the outstanding sculptures. Right now there is a temporary exhibit featuring maps of Texas and the West. One of the maps displayed areas controlled by various Mexican leaders during the 1910 revolution.
We thoroughly enjoy our trips to the Briscoe Museum. It is housed in a beautiful old building next to Riverwalk. The outdoor area is lovely although parking downtown is never easy. So it's worth it to stay awhile and go on a walk after the museum or enjoy a nearby restaurant to make the aggravation worthwhile. The Briscoe has wonderful family events that I highly recommend. The staff and volunteers are friendly and kind.
It's definitely a place to visit! It's a little smaller than I thought. But it has some beautiful art! It's right off the Riverwalk also so is great alone or for a day full of events. Great for Texas history.
Visited mid afternoon on a weekday and had no crowds at all. Really doesn't matter if you are into "Western" art specifically or not. The pieces and exhibits were interesting and visually stunning. Outdoor sculpture garden is free and that alone is worth stopping in to see. Adjacent to one of the River Walk spurs do very easy to make it a past of your downtown visit.
The Briscoe is a must visit when in San Antonio! Built in a lovely old post office, right on the river, it’s a beautiful example of adaptive reuse. The permanent collection is diverse with paintings, sculpture and western paraphernalia. The current temporary exhibit about the Spanish/Mexican Baja California cowboys who went to Hawaii is very well done and was a complete surprise to me. If you are choosing between the Fine Art Museum and the Briscoe, go western
