It took me several weeks to decide to do this and this is not my real name because the dancing community goes after its own. In the past several weeks I took a vogue class for the first time. While the class was ok, I'm disappointed with the way the instructor spoke. They were occasionally condescending and not completely supportive of first timers. I understand there is a learning curve and the course deals with multiple levels but they need to be more understanding of ALL the students and not just the ones they know (which showed a clickish element and was somewhat of a turnoff). I hope that BDC can instill in its instructors a more caring approach and remind them to be mindful of how they speak to paying clientele and that these classes are for all; not just those they know. I do plan on coming back and hope for a better instructional approach.
I have danced with BDC before and it is PHENOMENAL!!! I love BDC but my experience today was not so great but it was because of the instructor. I am hoping that this will bring light to the instructor involved. I had booked a drop in Theater class with Rebecca Frazier but she had a sub. Matthew Prescott. When I arrived I got my shoes on and I could see Matthew through the window and he was on the phone. I go to enter the studio when it is time to start class and he is putting his jacket on. He informs me that because only 2 people signed up that he would not be teaching. I asked what I needed to do and he responded with “they will be up to tell you what to do” and walked out. Ok no big deal. It sucks that I traveled all the way there for my class to be canceled but I understand. At this point the other student came in and I told her what had just happened. We went to meet with the people at the desk when the three of us (2 students and 1 desk employee) meet and discuss next steps. At this point Matthew had went back to get his hat and stops us in the hallway and says “sorry you two just aren’t worth my time”. It was completely rude. I’m not upset that he canceled the class but that comment was very unprofessional and rude. Even the employee was in shock. BDC responded great by giving me a full refund because I am from out of town and wouldn’t be able to use a class credit soon. I myself am a professional in the dance industry and an instructor and just felt that Matthew’s comments and attitude was completely inappropriate. I know this doesn’t reflect what BDC is and I hope that they take this into consideration when grooming Matthew Prescott in the future.
The hip-hop class was a disappointing experience. The instructor didn’t introduce himself and jumped straight into complex choreography that felt far too advanced for a beginner class — even though I have prior dance experience. About a minute in, I was asked to sit out for ten minutes in front of everyone, which felt disrespectful and uncomfortable. I ultimately decided to leave the class, accepting the financial loss in exchange for maintaining my dignity.
The hip hop instructor was rude. The pacing was too fast even for a beginner class. I had previous experience at another dance school. The instructor did not introduce himself. He just walked in, started the class and went right into complex moves I have never heard of before. About a minute in he made me sit out for 10 minutes. I didn’t appreciate being told that in front of others. I also don’t appreciate my money being wasted so I left. I accepted the financial loss as means of gaining my dignity back and noped my way out of there.
This Company gets it. The classes are organized and easy to book online and when you arrive, you are directed to the studio accordingly. Ive come here a few times and each time everything is very seamless and the classes were fun. They have all forms of dances and even have special deals and offers to make dancing affordable. I will definitely be back again and I highly recommend others come here as well.
