Since I came to Dallas, this center has been one of my safe spaces to deepen my knowledge of myself and make friends in a nice enviroment. The Sunday meetings, which come always with a really interesting talk from one of the members, are such a good way to expand the meditation practice through complex topics and personal experiences from different points of view. Also, the most important thing in any meditation center that you visit is to feel welcomed, included and free to ask the questions you might have, and that is the way I felt since my first visit. The meditation instructions on the first day were really practical and simple for begginers (on my first day I went with my dad and he loved it), and once you are ready to join the rest of the group, it feels as if you were always part of it.
A great place to learn about Buddhism and meditation. We are an agnostic family without much religious tradition, but with our son entering into teenage years we thought some spirituality and community would be helpful. This place has been exactly what we are looking for—non-theistic, philosophical, and welcoming. We’ve been coming for months now and been very impressed with the dharma talks by Will and Joan. We have learned much. Buddhist practices have brought real calming effects to our daily lives; I’ve noticed real changes in my teen. While I really wish things like how to view the realities in the world as they are, how to cope with pain, and how to be compassionate were better taught in schools, I’m also just glad we have found a place to learn all this.
I've been coming to the Dallas Shambala Center on Sundays for a year now and it's been life changing for me. They provide thoughtful instruction that is beginner friendly to someone newly learning about Buddhism, like myself. The meditation and talks about important life topics have truly helped me approach life differently and avoid anxiety and stress more often. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a meditation group or looking to learn more about Buddhism.
After difficulties encountered due to COVID, the Dallas shambhala center is re-grouping. At present it is both small and intimate. In particular, it is an ideal spot for people interested in learning to meditate. The center is not big on the structure often encountered with other groups. There are very few prayers or chants. As these traditional Buddhist liturgies can be confusing to newcomers, it only re-enforces this center's strength as a welcoming spot for new enthusiasts. The center has programming too. Classes are offered for those interested in learning more. The group has members who are educated and seasoned practicioners. They are easily approached and helpful. You will certainly feel welcomed, and if your naive about meditation practice, the teacher will provide special instruction on your first day. How enthused am I about the center? I joined as an official member almost immediately, and I've been a practicing Buddhist for over a decade.
This is a fantastic meditation center to practice meditation. Mindfulness meditation is congruent with Shambhala meditation and is focused on being in the present moment. The people here have decades of experience in many forms of mental health, and Buddhism. They are dedicated to making a difference in the world through loving kindness and compassion. I have never met a more supportive, less judgemental group of people. They also have amazing snacks!
