McDermott, I find, generally take a practical approach to car maintenance. They address what needs fixing. Not like when my wife takes her car to her Hyundai dealer and she is upsold on unnecessary fixes. McDermott keeps my old Audi A3 running smoothly and safely, and does so at a reasonable price.
Quick diagnostics and inspections just resolved brake shudder and no cabin heat. EM has friendly mechanics, and sound, honest problem solving. The front brake job feels great, and the cabin is toasty warm. My new go-to shop for my VW. A+.
Communication with staff was great overall. But had issues with the quote. I got a quote including total labour and part costs. I asked for a breakdown but they wouldnt give me specifics. I asked for specific model number and brand of the after market product that will be used on my car, but they were hesitant to provide me the information. I had to ask 4-5 times to finally get the product number. Turns out, the quoted part cost was 4 times what I googled online (including shipping). I asked my car’s original dealership’s price: while original part costed way more(obviously), labour costed same (around $800). Although the job could get annoying, as far as I know it shouldnt take more than an hour or two to get the job done. So Im sure a lot of the labour cost was profit to the shop (including shop expenses). I doubt the mechanic gets paid more than $70 an hr, so at most actual labour cost should be around $70-210. I am understand with labour cost manipulation, but marking up supply costs by 4 times also seems over the top. As far as I know, shops are regulated by consumer protection and they are obligated to give specifics of the costs of the service when asked. I ended up going with the quote because my car needed emergency repair and I needed to use the car asap. Overall, mechanics seem skilled, but more honest service would have made me a repeat customer.
My quote was: $1200 for cv axle replacement. $2000 for drive shaft replacement. $200 for alignment. Although less than dealership, doesnt seem affordable. Don’t seem honest pricing. You have front desk people talking to you, not the actual mechanic that touches your car. My car is a 13 yr old Mercedes. Was not given the option for rebuilding the parts which I later learned it is more affordable and better than replacing with after market part. I think couldve given alignment as a free service with either or both of the other services. You be the judge. Edit: I was indeed wrong with the alignment pricing i stated originally. The number were from on top my head. Other numbers are roughly the quote I received. As for what Ive wrote regarding my experience, that is my opinion and what happened. I shouldnt have even compared the pricing with dealership. Would have been more clear if compared with similar auto repair shops or independent mechanics on kijiji. Im sure anyone will do their own pricing research before they make a decision. I just wanted to emphasize to do your own diligence. Edit2: it is quite funny you feel your reputation is solely built from only positivity. Learn to PR better than calling a review fake and only pointing out a small number of the actual whole quote. Are you indirectly admitting your other quotes?
I brought my Mercedes Benz in for maintenance here for the first time today, trusting the great reviews. And I wasn’t disappointed. The service was completed quickly, and they provided a detailed report afterward with photos and clear explanations of the work done. Overall, I’m very happy with the quality and professionalism of the service, and I’ll continue bringing my car here.
